  1. Sounds are amplified in the ear by hair cell motility. The signal for this comes from the brain. But what if the sounds are loud enough to cause damage? Then the brain must protect the cochlea. This important work shows the major involvement of an ATP gated ion channel in this damage limitation process, P2X7. P2X channels are somewhat neglected in their physiological roles, so this role in hearing is quite fascinating!
