  1. Eco‑anxiety and mental health

    * What kids told us about eco‑anxiety

    "This is our home.
If we destroy it, and we can’t build it up,
then that’s a part of the Earth that’s destroyed,
and we won’t be able to get it back."
    Matthew, age ten

"Eco-anxiety is a rational response to a real threat." >>
    theconversation.com/im-mad-at-

    * "Mental health seems to be having a bigger toll on people's ability to work...More than 8 million people rely on income support, driven by a growing number of mental health claims."

"With around 2 million more people now accessing payments than a decade ago, the surge is being driven by Australians whose physical and mental health has deteriorated to the point they can no longer work." >>

In this [Campfire Talk] we delve deep into a difficult, but necessary subject: climate grief. Our guest today is Elisabeth Dimitras, a neurodivergent queer soul activist and founder of the online antispeciesist website Ethos & Empathy. Elisabeth is from Greece, but had to move to Sweden due to climate change. She'll tell us about her dreams, the story of her loss, what she learned about the mourning the living, both human and non-human, and about climate grief. In the [Offering], Elisabeth will read us The Shambhala Warrior Prophecy as told by Johanna Macy.

Attention: The episode can be a bit emotionally heavy at times. There is a mention of suicide in the last half.

  4. Excerpt from "Tragic Details About #ModestMouse" from 2023...

    #IsaacBrock suffers from #EcoAnxiety

"Isaac Brock has long been vehemently opposed to #urbanization and the #DestructionOfNature, and these have remained central lyrical themes going back to the band's earliest material (per Paste Magazine). As Healthline notes, such feelings of frustration towards environmentally destructive practices, anger at the seeming inevitability of #ClimateChange, and fear for the Earth's future are called eco-anxiety –- and Brock has been suffering from it for years.

"In Pitchfork's 2012 '#LonesomeCrowdedWest' documentary, he described living in Washington State in the '90s as having a 'front-row seat to watching #forests disappearing and #UrbanSprawl begin,' lamenting the constant clearing of natural places to make way for #StripMalls. In fact, he was still thinking about it in 2021 when he told Uproxx that his childhood home regularly flooded due to forest #clearcutting.

"Many Modest Mouse songs center on shameless human destruction, with the 2015 hit '#LampshadesOnFire' -– in which Brock sings about mankind going to space to find a new planet after destroying Earth -– serving as a notable example. But in recent years, he's making an effort to focus on the positive, as evidenced by hopeful songs like 'The Sun Hasn't Left,' in which he sings, 'You're not wrong, things are a mess but there's still something left.' 'I found optimism where it actually existed because I needed it,' he told NME in 2021, adding, 'Y'know, I got three kids ... I don't think s***'s gonna get easier for everyone.' "

  10. Interested in #ClimateAction ? You should come to the inaugural C-Change conference June 14–19. Free & open to the public. Join one or many sessions at Concordia's campuses in Montreal, a farm in Ontario, or virtually! My spouse (teaches in the creative arts therapies) conceived this as a way to shift action on the #ClimateCrisis in a systemic direction so C-Change is interdisciplinary. 11. I’ve had this theory for a long time: the main export of capitalism seems to be pollution and environmental toxins. Every time I read or see something about this, I get uneasy shivers. Just look at the mercury levels in tuna-an everyday example of how profit-driven production impacts our environment and health.

  12. (Eco)Anxiety in Nuclear Holocaust Fiction and Climate Fiction: Doomsday Clock Narratives by Dominika Oramus, 2023

Disaster fiction, nuclear holocaust, and climate change alike allows us to unearth and anatomise contemporary psychodynamics and enables us to identify pretraumatic stress as the common denominator of seemingly unrelated types of texts.

  13. @largess "The despair you feel because of the dying of the ash trees and the lessening of birdsong, the dwindling number of insects, these are the signs of your capacity to love the world. Do not deny that love. Let it be the fire that drives you to act, not the burden that crushes you. Yes, we face a calamitous future, but does that not make our efforts, however small, even more necessary?"
    Beautiful, thanks for sharing.

  14. Much is already being done, so let's fight the #ecoanxiety by giving credit to some of the initiatives.

We Don't Have Time ("the world's largest media platform for climate action"), with their #BuyMoreTime campaign, help spreading knowledge about climate solutions and global actions.

They are getting ready to cover the UN Biodiversity Conference #COP16 in Cali, Colombia, which main goal is to develop a plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

  18. Biodiversity is being annihilated at a terrifying rate

A way of life handed down from generation to generation, from country to country. A modus operandi of replacing the diversity of life with a depleted mono-culture.

Anglo-Saxon countries such as Australia, New Zealand (Aotearoa), and North America still follow this prototypical form from the UK. The UK today is “one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world”

“The UK has sleepwalked into this nature crisis and the fact that we are now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world simply isn’t being talked about enough. Organisers cited the 2023 State of Nature report on the UK’s biodiversity, which found that 43% of UK bird species were in decline and 97% of wildflower meadows have disappeared since the second world war. They warned we are “entering the sixth mass extinction event”.

"Buh buh buh buh buh buh ba da dah
Duh duh duh duh duh duh da da dah

We're all going, we're all going

Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out
The room lit up and we ran about
Well, this is what I really call a party now
Packed up our cars, move to the next town

Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out
This is what I really call a party now
Well, fear makes us really, really run around
This one's done so where to now?
Our eyes light up, we have no shame at all
Well, you all know what I'm talking about
Shaved off my eyebrows, let 'em fall to the ground
So I can't look surprised right now

Pack up again, head to the next place
Where we'll make the same mistakes
Burn it up or just chop it down
A-this one's done so where to now?

Buh buh buh buh buh buh ba da dah
Duh duh duh duh duh duh dada dah

We're all going, we're all going

A-this one's done so where to now?
Our eyes light up, we have no shame at all
Well, you all know what I'm talking about
The room lights up, but we're still dancing around
We're having fun, having some fun now

Pack up again, head to the next place
Where we'll make the same mistakes
Open one up and let it fall to the ground
Pile out the door when it all runs out

Buh buh buh buh buh buh ba da dah

We're all going, we're all going

We have spines and other bones
We'll eat your food, we'll throw stones
Oh, this is how it's always gone
And this is how it's going to go
    Well, we're the human race
We're going to party at this place
    And then move on
    (Tough luck)

We'll kill you off and then make a clone
Yeah, we got spines, yeah, we have bones
This is how it's always gone
And this is how it's going to go

As our feelings are getting hurt
Oh, we want you to do the work
Our ass looks great inside these jeans
Well, we want just our water clean

Well, this is how it's always been
And this is how it's going to be
    So you just move on

Well, the air's on fire so we're moving on
Better find another one cause this one's done
Waiting for the magic of the scientist's glove
To push, push, push, push, pull us up

Spend some time, floating in outer space
Find another planet, make the same mistakes
Our mind's all shattered when we climb aboard
Hoping for the scientist to find another door"

And this is how it's going to go
    Well, we're the human race
We're going to party at this place
    And then move on
    (Tough luck)

We'll kill you off and then make a clone
Yeah, we got spines, yeah, we have bones
This is how it's always gone
And this is how it's going to go

As our feelings are getting hurt
Oh, we want you to do the work
Our ass looks great inside these jeans
Well, we want just our water clean

Well, this is how it's always been
And this is how it's going to be
    So you just move on

Well, the air's on fire so we're moving on
Better find another one cause this one's done
Waiting for the magic of the scientist's glove
To push, push, push, push, pull us up

Spend some time, floating in outer space
Find another planet, make the same mistakes
Our mind's all shattered when we climb aboard
Hoping for the scientist to find another door"

  23. The semblance of civilization is crumbling, so might as well party on , eh?

Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out

A-this one's done so where to now?
Our eyes light up, we have no shame at all
Well, you all know what I'm talking about
The room lights up, but we're still dancing around
We're having fun, having some fun now

Pack up again, head to the next place
Where we'll make the same mistakes
Open one up and let it fall to the ground
Pile out the door when it all runs out

Buh buh buh buh buh buh ba da dah
Duh duh duh duh duh duh da da dah
We're all going, we're all going

We have spines and other bones
We'll eat your food, we'll throw stones

  29. Our newest blog post, "Climate Change is a Menta lHealth Issue (and part of a solarpunk present....)" is live! Ariel writes about the imperative for journalists / essayist to acknowledge that published articles on climate change should include a list of resources (like articles on mental health) for readers to act on after reading.

It has been proven time and again that #action is what helps many humans mitigate climate despair and eco-anxiety, and Ariel argues that we have a duty of care to provide those tools to people.

What do you do to mitigate your own negative #climate emotions? Let us know in the comments.

  30. 3) Interesting to see this article from EuroNews acknowledging the problem of #Ecoanxiety.

While it’s important to be realistic about the #ClimateChange situation, it’s equally important to understand that things are changing in many areas for the better. We need that change to be faster, but also to dispel the notion of #AllIsLost that can paralyze us and drove us into #depression

  35. Therapists see surge in eco-anxiety as smoke fills skies.
"The climate crisis is a main talking point in the weekly therapy sessions. The more people experience the crisis first-hand, the more they realize they need to have support to talk about it...The fires have triggered a sense of fear, rage and despair, which is a completely healthy response to what we’re witnessing on Earth.”

  36. Climate anxiety in children and young people and their beliefs about government responses to climate change: a global survey

"Climate anxiety and eco-anxiety (distress relating to the climate and ecological crises) are gaining attention worldwide as people become increasingly aware of the current and future global threats associated with our warming planet."

"Climate change has important implications for the health and futures of children and young people, yet they have little power to limit its harm, making them vulnerable to climate anxiety."

"Climate anxiety and dissatisfaction with government responses are widespread in children and young people in countries across the world and impact their daily functioning. A perceived failure by governments to respond to the climate crisis is associated with increased distress."

  38. What does good 'feel' like?
Finding time and space to talk about hope.

"‘we often ask - 'what does good look like’ - yet this should be ‘what does good feel like’. We are not passive observers of what good is, but active participants, connected, and therefore something we feel rather than look at. And not something that will happen without our active involvement"
