Nicholas Ridley was a Protestant martyr. He says that during the old Catholic era, many neglected public provision for the poor needy folk: orphans and unemployed. Neglect is a “wayward”, a prodigal lifestyle. A greater “prodigality” was the gilding of stones in churches.
Are there any of these wrong priorities today, the flattering of friars and neglect of impotent needy folks?
How can you avoid prodigality?

Some become legalists against all booze.
Do you know the names of people in these situations? How can we address societal factors affecting addiction, and be more involved in a first-names-basis kind of ministry with prisoners, those in poor houses, families suffering from domestic violence?

Ezekiel Hopkins, Anglican bishop in Ireland, on the story of Lazarus in Luke 16. God’s providence is mocked if we claim that it consists of a glutton’s table next to a poor man being licked by dogs. This is worship of the belly. Might there be enough evidence to equally indict any of us?
How can you speak up to interrupt those who declare God’s blessings on extravagant scenes without even scraps for God’s children?
