Every decade or so (first with YUM, then DNF, then DNF5) I end up filing roughly the same set of issues around RPM packages cache management vs GNOME Software and PackageKit (i.e.: caches don't keep themselves tidy enough and my operating system partition fills up), but I think this time there is probably just one remaining issue I encountered and reported: https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf5/issues/2831

What on earth has happened to the emacs-nw (former emacs-nox) packaging!?

On Alma Linux 10.2 (RHEL clone) it pulls in gcc and git-core, make and kernel-headers, pkgconfig - which again pulls in tons of Perl packages. On top of that there are weak dependencies such as gcc-c++.

This needs to be cleaned up!

Since I use the "dnf debuginfo-install" command so often (instead of debuginfod) to cleanly install debug symbols for apps and libraries on #Fedora, which lets me get meaningful backtraces for crashes reporting or sysprof performance profiling, I figured I might as well request the ability to autocomplete filenames with Tab: https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf-plugins-core/issues/623

Yesterday an automatic #DNF upgrade process prevented my #Podman 6 on #CentOS Stream from starting rootless containers properly.

Many new features came in with v6 and impacted my #rootless customizations - socket based activation, aardvark per-user DNS processes, etc.

Those are powerful features that put #Podman ahead of #Docker in many ways.

AI agents actually did not fully understand the problem, as the v6 just landed (together with #netavark v2 and aardvark-dns v2).

Yesterday an automatic #DNF upgrade process prevented my #Podman 6 on #CentOS Stream from starting rootless containers properly.

Many new features came in with v6 and impacted my #rootless customizations - socket based activation, aardvark per-user DNS processes, etc.

Those are powerful features that put #Podman ahead of #Docker in many ways.

Amikor már hónapok óta nem frissíted a Fedorát, mert ugye minek?!

Most, hogy verziófrissítést készülök csinálni, az azt megelőző rendszerfrissítés során... észrevettem, hogy lehet kicsit elhanyagoltam a rendszerfrissítéseket.

De, mentségemre szóljon, hogy ha stabil a rendszer, akkor nem szeretek belenyúlni, és sajnos, vagy nem sajnos, de néha egy egy #dnf update után megesik, hogy eltörik egy-egy csomag. Ritkán, ugye, de tuti, hogy az, amelyikre éppen égetően szükségem van.

Fedora 44 includes a small improvement for enabling/disabling repos that makes my OCD happy.

old syntax:
dnf config-manager setopt $repoid.enabled=1
dnf config-manager setopt $repoid.enabled=0

new syntax:
dnf config-manager enable $repoid
dnf config-manager disable $repoid

Anyone an idea how to fix/get around this mess?

I have a system that says its Fedora 42 in /etc/os-release
But it has still the fc41 packages installed and tries to use these repos with dnf update.

Trying again to run the system upgrade errors out as seen in the second screenshot, and doing a normal dnf update with forcing the releasever variable to 42 fails because of all these conflicting files between the fc41 and fc42 packages 😔

Die Bilanz nach acht Monaten automatischen Updates per DNF in Fedora:

Ein immer aktueller PC und Notebook.
Beide haben Nvidia GPUs und selbst diese Tatsache hat zu keinen Ausfällen geführt.

Meinem Bruder habe ich letzten Oktober ebenfalls Fedora 42 und automatische Updates für sein Notebook mit Nvidia-GPU konfiguriert und das läuft auch geräuschlos.

Alles in allem schon praktisch. Wäre nur schön das über die Gnome oder KDE Oberfläche aktivieren zu können.

Und mein innerer Monk vermisst es irgendwie DNF5 bei der Arbeit zuzuschauen.

Ist ungefähr so ein Zen-Moment wie beim Windows 98 Defragmentierer 😊
