#Spotify has something called #DiscoveryMode where musicians can pay the company to push their music in the algorithm, in exchange for 30% of the stream revenue. (I had no idea but of course they do) When this is done on the radio, it is called #payola and is illegal.

In a nutshell, Spotify charges a commission on streams of tracks in special, discovery scenarios. No cash outlay.
Normal streams of the same tracks are commission-free.
