  1. 8/29/76 his master’s wheels (maybe): another studio DANCING IN THE STREET, this time with donna jean (& only donna jean) on vocals & a tasty mu-tron jam. could probably be de/up-mixed so she’s a bit louder. they’ve abandoned the pretense of keeping things under 5 minutes as on the 8/26 session & actually find a cool accelerated jam space in the outro. did this get clive to sign them? #deadfreaksunite #gd082976 [2/2]

  2. 8/26/76 his master’s wheels (maybe): 2 fragmentary & 2 complete instrumental takes of DANCING IN THE STREET. keith on rhodes. both full takes seem as if they’re rehearsed enough to land at under 5 minutes (or perhaps this is them rehearsing them down to that length). 2nd pass has a drum break for the vocal breakdown & nifty garcia outro. notably, the 1st tape with garcia using the distinctive mu-tron envelope filter that defined his later ‘70s sound. #deadfreaksunite #gd082676 [2/2]

  3. 7/30/66 vancouver: as event MC comes on, lesh: “we’ll use a simple syllable to test our microphones tonight. the syllable is narc. narc. narc. narc.” 9-minute DANCING IN THE STREET opener reaches for fleeting modal peak, graceful sense of movement. last known version of dorsey burnette’s HEY LITTLE ONE. goodbye to the too-clever-for-this-world YOU DON’T HAVE TO ASK. and off go owsley stanley & tim scully with the dead’s equipment truck to establish a new LSD lab. #gd073066 #deadfreaksunite [3/3]

  4. effective charge from SUPPLICATION into LET IT GROW, which sounds like it’s going off rails before drum break & finds new changes, dissolving, & re-forming. short but deep DARK STARry jams bracket WHARF RAT, with beautiful quiet donna vocals & proto-TERRAPIN pomp. OTHER ONE starts to go out but turns into ST. STEPHEN instead. that’s okay, too. not much jamming beyond, but the transitions are fun & well done. elegant STELLA BLUE, drum(s) clutter coming on. #deadfreaksunite #gd071876 [4/4]

  5. 7/17/66 fillmore auditorium: another good miniature jam on CREAM PUFF WAR that doesn’t break through, exactly, but band (& billy, really) starting to swing/flow during solos. nice reverb-y atmosphere during slinky 9-minute KING BEE. last KEEP ROLLING BY. unlike the earlier take, this feels like it should have stax horns, & has misterioso maybe-kinda-modal jam in 1st half before pig-style rave-up. definitely alt universe dead, a pigpen tune with psych jam. adios! #deadfreaksunite #gd071766 [2/2]

  6. gnarly OTHER ONE with many corners & 10-minute old-style space-out. odd not to hear phil singing, which garcia keeps forgetting to do. big story of set is properly chill A+ EYES that veers into odd-timed & purposeful mini-jams that feel related to ace’s era themes, evolving gracefully (almost) into GOIN’ DOWN THE ROAD, before finishing off THE OTHER ONE & veering back. 14-minute standalone NOT FADE AWAY encore. #deadfreaksunite #gd071776 [3/3]

  7. not on tape: a set closing jam with the airplane, the dead, joan baez, & mimi farina. #deadfreaksunite #gd071666 [4/4]

  8. 24-minute PLAYING IN THE BAND > COSMIC CHARLIE, restless until a bass lead close to KING SOLOMON’S MARBLES/STRONGER THAN DIRT (but not either) & band remembers space-jazz moves. dave’s picks graciously excises SAMSON & DELILAH, brilliant from vibe perspective, feeding from A+ CHARLIE placement into 26-minute SPANISH JAM > DRUMZ > THE WHEEL > PLAYING IN THE BAND. detailed SPANISH JAM builds from zero, last ’til ’81. lesh wishes bill graham a fake happy birthday. #deadfreaksunite #gd071676 [3/3]

  9. 47-minute LET IT GROW > EYES OF THE WORLD > WHARF RAT > THE OTHER ONE > THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED. LET IT GROW keeps going after the final return, landing in another speedy & cluttered (130 bpm) EYES, the old outro jamming now disappearing from intro, dissolving into beautiful 60-second garcialogue. 1st OTHER ONE of ’76, with garcia slide lead-in. 8 minutes & 1st verse only, escapes triplets just before choppy bass solo bridge into MUSIC NEVER STOPPED. #deadfreaksunite #gd071476 [3/3]

  10. hey, a newly surfaced grateful dead tape from may 1970! it's murky af, incomplete, & briefly interrupted by what sounds like a recording of a military college graduation but hey, a newly surfaced dead tape from worcester '70! download in post: deadessays.blogspot.com/2026/0 #deadfreaksunite

  11. 2nd set not as cool, though 16-minute ST. STEPHEN > NOT FADE AWAY > ST. STEPHEN gets spaced again, & links with a nice one-breath segue into SUGAR MAGNOLIA. despite being semi-awkwardly wedged between SUGAR MAGNOLIA & SUNSHINE DAYDREAM, great STELLA BLUE regains many of its dynamics. 16-minute encore DANCING IN THE STREET is longest yet, & (while still goofy) goes out into nearly PLAYING-like warpage, almost sailing away entirely. #deadfreaksunite #gd071376 [3/3]

  12. weir tests out new silly blues growl in SAMSON & DELILAH & elsewhere. 26-minute HELP ON THE WAY > SLIPKNOT! > FRANKLIN’S TOWER. listened to FRANKLIN’s 2x on headphones. 1st seemed boring & sleepy; 2nd, filled with details & mini-jams. 2026 listen: heard as the latter again, weir blipping against CHINA CAT riffs. super mellow 21-minute WHARF RAT > DRUMZ > THE WHEEL, getting nicely weird & free as a prelude to THE WHEEL, but the show never quite achieves space. #deadfreaksunite #gd071276 [3/3]

  13. memories of the dylan & the dead in DC, today in 1986, part 5. #deadfreaksunite #gd070786 [9/9]

  14. @bourgwick I was there, 16 turning 17 years old. Hot as Hades and smelled literally like a zoo. It was a long hot day but we had fun. We were too young to judge Jerry's condition or anything, we just bopped around the stadium for 6 hours. #deadfreaksunite

  15. memories of the dylan & the dead in DC, today in 1986, part 4. #deadfreaksunite #gd070686 [8/8]

  16. scene reports from dylan & the dead in buffalo, part 5. #deadfreaksunite #gd070486 [9/9]

  17. 60 years ago today, the grateful dead at the fillmore west, playing between group b & love at the independence ball. jerry garcia sits in with love on "revelation" during the late show, though owsley only taped the dead's sets. #deadfreaksunite heads.social/@bourgwick/116851

  18. memories of the dylan & the dead at the rubber bowl, part 3. #deadfreaksunite #gd070286 [8/8]

  19. memories of the dead in cincinnati, today in 1986, part 3. #deadfreaksunite #gd063086 [7/7]

  20. another nicely linked 2nd set. satisfying 32-minute PLAYING IN THE BAND > THE WHEEL > PLAYING IN THE BAND, fanning into free jams (with extra keith) & down into borderline garcialogue. THE WHEEL finally rolls into cool outro & open-feeling move back to PLAYING, moving down to whisper. 21-minute ST. STEPHEN > NOT FADE AWAY > ST. STEPHEN. garcia finds A+ martian loop-riff in NOT FADE AWAY. band builds & dramatically ties it back to song, an almost quiet ending. #deadfreaksunite #gd062976 [3/3]

  21. 58-minute ESTIMATED PROPHET > EYES OF THE WORLD > DRUMZ > SPACE > THE OTHER ONE > WHARF RAT > THROWING STONES > NOT FADE AWAY. once again they’ve forgotten how ESTIMATED starts, though it floats/dissolves nicely. abrupt mid-tempo 120bpm EYES. not feeling the steel drum synth. synth loops in DRUMZ again too quiet, though. healy-weirded OTHER ONE starts drumless & gets gonzo, but basically bellyfloppin’ into WHARF RAT. cool keys during THROWING STONES outro. #deadfreaksunite #gd062986 [3/3]

  22. * look, if you want to get technical about it: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN came first, written during with an uptempo groove (& sung by hart) during a jam at hart’s barn in ‘73ish, then became HAPPINESS IS DRUMMING for the ’76 diga LP (though zakir hussain introduced it as FIRE during their ’75 live appearances), & then back into FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN. #deadfreaksunite #gd062876 [4/4]

  23. memories of the dead at alpine valley, today in 1986, part 3. #deadfreaksunite #gd062886 [5/5]

  24. 6/27/76 chicago: 28-minute LET IT GROW > WHARF RAT, former with the 1st exciting & spaced DRUMZ of ’76. big explosion back into song, melting instantly to jam (with some tentativeness about whether to go further out) & gooey transition. 29-minute HELP ON THE WAY > SLIPKNOT! > FRANKLIN’S TOWER hits satisfying oceanic swirl in SLIPKNOT! slightly lumpy move to FRANKLIN’S with off-mic donna enthusiasm & long quiet lay-outs (& nice bump into SUGAR MAGNOLIA). #deadfreaksunite #gd062776 [2/2]

  25. memories of dylan & the dead at the metrodome, part 4. #deadfreaksunite #gd062686 [11/11]

  26. faith-rejuvenating 33-minute PLAYING IN THE BAND > ST. STEPHEN > THE WHEEL > PLAYING IN THE BAND with well-developed meltdown, a groovy little jam inside ST. STEPHEN, & a rolling WHEEL outro. 20-minute CRAZY FINGERS > STELLA BLUE has short but cool transition improv, though steam disappears during a mostly dynamic-free STELLA BLUE. #deadfreaksunite #gd062676 [3/3]
