Data-Driven Hollywood: The New Data Professionals in the Age of Streaming
Violaine Roussel
(Princeton University Press)
"In Hollywood today, thousands of data specialists work for streaming video platforms, playing a role not just in distribution and marketing but also in decisions about content and production. In Data-Driven Hollywood, Violaine Roussel examines the emergence of this new category of professionals at the heart of the Hollywood dream factory. Roussel shows how the rise of data and algorithm specialists has transformed organizations and rearranged power relationships within them. Drawing on extensive interviews and in situ observations, she describes the ways that technical “data work” carried out by professionals at streaming platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ has had a significant effect on creative decisions.
Rather than fetishizing data and algorithmic models, Roussel explores the practices of the professionals who shape them, manipulate them, and give them power. She examines the relationships of these workers with traditional producers, describing legitimacy struggles and the eventual stabilization of new professional arrangements. Roussel’s account of the ways that data specialists deploy algorithmic models to reinvent their industry’s approach to content, artists, and the market—the first in-depth sociological study of the rise of this new profession—reveals the new forms of power and knowledge at play in today’s Hollywood."

"The production of artificial intelligence (AI) requires human labour, with tasks ranging from well-paid engineering work to often-outsourced data work. This commentary explores the economic and policy implications of improving working conditions for AI data workers, specifically focusing on the impact of clearer task instructions and increased pay for data annotators. It contrasts rule-based and standard-based approaches to task instructions, revealing evidence-based practices for increasing accuracy in annotation and lowering task difficulty for annotators. AI developers have an economic incentive to invest in these areas as better annotation can lead to higher quality AI systems. The findings have broader implications for AI policy beyond the fairness of labour standards in the AI economy. Testing the design of annotation instructions is crucial for the development of annotation standards as a prerequisite for scientific review and effective human oversight of AI systems in protection of ethical values and fundamental rights."

Tech life is rarely dull. Partly because so many "great advice" articles I see don't accord with my experiences.
For example, in one of my feeds is a piece: "SQL Query Optimization for Data Engineers" of which half the things in it would be bad advice in my work.
Data engines and query optimisers vary so much that many "expert" assumptions prove false on them.
There's really no substitute for:
- understanding how your platform really works;
- trying out multiple ways.

#AI #GenerativeAI #AITraining #DataWork #Inequality: "Labor plays a major, albeit largely unrecognized role in the development of artificial intelligence. Machine learning algorithms are predicated on data-intensive processes that rely on humans to execute repetitive and difficult-to-automate, but no less essential, tasks such as labeling images, sorting items in lists, recording voice samples, and transcribing audio files. Online platforms and networks of subcontractors recruit data workers to execute such tasks in the shadow of AI production, often in lower-income countries with long-standing traditions of informality and lessregulated labor markets. This study unveils the resulting complexities by comparing the working conditions and the profiles of data workers in Venezuela, Brazil, Madagascar, and as an example of a richer country, France. By leveraging original data collected over the years 2018-2023 via a mixed-method design, we highlight how the cross-country supply chains that link data workers to core AI production sites are reminiscent of colonial relationships, maintain historical economic dependencies, and generate inequalities that compound with those inherited from the past. The results also point to the importance of less-researched, non-English speaking countries to understand key features of the production of AI solutions at planetary scale."

Today, AI is still powered by millions of data workers, both men and women. In Victorian England, many of the same data tasks were performed by "lady computers". Though they were recruited at Cambridge colleges, they got paid as little as £4 per month. Same old story.

#AnalogPrivilege #AI #DataWork: "There are many ways to reduce and perhaps even eradicate analog privilege. A right to be an exception can grant manual overrides based on merit instead of social or economic status. Since analog privilege and automated precarity are two sides of the same coin, protecting people against some detrimental AI systems correspondingly reduces analog privilege. To that end, the EU AI Act’s ban on unacceptably high-risk systems is directionally sound. But high-level AI laws alone won’t cut it: the technical community is also crucial to improving intelligibility so people subject to AI systems can actually understand and contest decisions.
Ultimately, looking at analog privilege and the detrimental effects of AI systems side by side fosters a better understanding of AI’s social impacts. Zooming out from AI harms and contrasting them with corresponding analog privileges makes legible a subtle permutation of longstanding patterns of exceptionalism. More importantly, putting the spotlight on privilege provides a valuable opportunity to interrupt unearned advantages and replace them with equitable, reasoned approaches to determining who should be subject to or exempt from AI systems." https://www.techpolicy.press/the-future-is-analog-if-you-can-afford-it/?utm_source=petitfours&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=petit-fours-400-on-analog-privilege-data-work-and

@ericholscher some days I feel that there should be a good history piece on their history and variations of concept, labeling and implementation.
Although having said that I guess I haven't looked for one for quite a while.
My awareness began with "crosstab" queries in the first version of Access. Then later with Cognos cubes (a la Transformer & PowerPlay).
As I didn't use Excel much I didn't know of its pivot support until it had been there quite a while.

It's been a while since I've put an article on the DEV web site, but today I had an itch to scratch.
From mid-afternoon I wrote enough SQL to make a simple "extreme date" collector for the Teradata that I work on.
It seemed a neat enough bunch of code that I felt like anonymising and annotating it, so now you can see it at:

#AI #GenerativeAI #DataWork #MicroWork: "This article provides a new typology for understanding human labour integrated into the production of artificial intelligence systems through data preparation and model evaluation. We call these forms of labour ‘AI data work’ and show how they are an important and necessary element of the artificial intelligence production process. We draw on fieldwork with an artificial intelligence data business process outsourcing centre specialising in computer vision data, alongside a decade of fieldwork with microwork platforms, business process outsourcing, and artificial intelligence companies to help dispel confusion around the multiple concepts and frames that encompass artificial intelligence data work including ‘ghost work’, ‘microwork’, ‘crowdwork’ and ‘cloudwork’. We argue that these different frames of reference obscure important differences between how this labour is organised in different contexts. The article provides a conceptual division between the different types of artificial intelligence data work institutions and the different stages of what we call the artificial intelligence data pipeline. This article thus contributes to our understanding of how the practices of workers become a valuable commodity integrated into global artificial intelligence production networks." https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20539517241232632
