Stolen from Squeakitties on Tumblr, but the recent Folding Ideas Video on Mr. Beast didn't emphasize enough how strange it was that Mr. Beast had to ask 12 random YouTubers "How do you build Fandom?". Like, it marks a turning point in the narrative of the essay, it has a whole title card to itself, it's given significant spotlight, but nothing shows how HOLLOW Mr. Beast's media empire is more than the TVTropes page on Beast Games. This is the whole thing. 114 words. Not a single fan cared enough to add more than 114 words. That's about as many words as are in this post. No subpages either. Jimmy's creative output never evolved from counting to 100,000.

Pleased to find that #DanOlsen / #FoldingIdeas has released a new video and it's on #dinosaur #fossils ... and creationism and human gullibility.

Not as mind-expanding as his videos on flat-earthism, NFTs, the metaverse or GameStop, but still a fascinating watch that (yet again) shows how deeply all our misinformation-fuelled problems are grounded in human nature and US evangelical hotbeddery.

Dan Olsen's latest Folding Ideas video is bewildering and fascinating... it's a (long) video-essay on the internet subculture and lore that arose following the Gamestop pump-and-dump excitement in 2021.

Had to watch it in three sittings to fully internalise some of the nuances of the story and truly appreciate the depths these people have allowed themselves to be dragged.
