  1. Daniel Wood Gatton Jr. was born in September of 1945 in Washington, D.C. He coined his style as “Redneck Jazz” and I think that’s perfectly fitting for how he plays. He got the name from Evan Johns, who had written a song with that title. Danny started his journey with guitar at 9 years old and was the son of a rhythm guitarist. Between 1960-1964 he played in a Jazz band called the Offbeats. After that he made his way to Nashville and started work as a session musician. He gained more attention back in Washington in the 1970’s playing with Liz Meyer & Friends as well as other local bands in his area. By 1975 he released his debut record “American Music” and then followed up with “Redneck Jazz” in 1978. That was later turned into a band name called “Redneck Jazz Explosion.”

Danny pretty much played everything from bluegrass to country to jazz to blues to rock and anything in between, but he was most known as a country/rockabilly guitarist. He had nicknames like “Telemaster” and “The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist.” Also, “The Humbler.” The guy was just cuttin’ heads wherever he went and jammed.

Danny’s life was sadly cut short at the age of 49 though. He had suffered small physical strokes that caused numbness in his left hand, severely affecting the way he could play guitar the way he wanted to and knew he could. Due to depression, he took his own life at his farm in Maryland in 1994. He was found in his garage.
