  9. Love from #Chandra & #WISE in this dazzling image of the Cocoon Nebula that resembles a heart :hearthands:

This nebula is located in the #constellation Cygnus, which is associated with a tragic love story. For more on that #myth / #StarLore, see here: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

  10. For #MythologyMonday -- my favorite #GreekMyth associated with the constellation Cygnus is about the death of Phaethon.

After Phaethon was killed by Zeus for nearly crashing the chariot of Helios, his lover #Cygnus collected every one of his bones from the river where his body was scattered by Zeus's thunderbolt. The gods were so moved by Cygnus's grief and devotion, they turned him into a swan and put him in the night sky.

Phaethon's sisters, the Heliades, also mourned at the river side, eventually becoming black polars on the side of the river where his remains fell.

  11. Lost in Space.

A wide field view of the autumn Milky Way from the tail end of Cygnus on the left, to Perseus on the right.

With so many stars captured in this photo, it's hard to see familiar constellations. But you can see the Andromeda galaxy as a small oval near the upper edge of the frame. (Dark, indistinct silhouettes along the lower left edge of the frame are the shadows of a couple trees.)

The second graphic is a sky simulation from planetarium software. The red wire frame box shows the coverage of the photo in the context of a very large portion of the sky.

  12. The #scientists pointed a balloon-borne telescope called #XL-Calibur at a black hole, #Cygnus X-1, located about 7,000 light-years from Earth. “The observations we made will be used by scientists to test increasingly realistic, state-of-the-art computer simulations of physical processes close to the black hole

  13. Star colors in summer (and one autumn) constellations.

Camera intentionally defocused to make the stars into disks. Star colors are easier to perceive in larger dots, compared to tiny specks. All photos are a single exposure on a fixed tripod.

    First photo is Cygnus.

    Second photo is Aquila.

    Third photo is Cepheus.

Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft, launched last Tuesday, January 30, has reached the International Space Station and was captured by the Canadarm2 robotic arm. Astronaut Loral O'Hara, assisted by his colleague Jasmin Moghbeli, will soon begin the slow maneuver to move the Cygnus until it docks with the Station's Unity module after about two hours.

Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft blasted off atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center on its NG-20 or CRS NG-20 mission. After about 15 minutes, it successfully separated from the rocket's last stage and set on its course. This is the first of at least three resupply missions to the International Space Station with various payloads launched using the Falcon 9 rocket.

  19. #SkyWatch #Astrophotography The #Cocoon Nebula aka #IC5146 is a star nursery about 4000 light years away in the #Cygnus constellation. The central star that lights it is only 100,000 years old. The nebula is surrounded by a dark lane of dust called Barnard 168 which gives it the appearance of having a dark tail. There are thousands of young stars in this complex. #StillLearning

  20. Got to watch the last #Antares 230 series launch from #Wallops on Tuesday. Heading up for #ISS resupply and to deliver some #science #experiments via the #Cygnus cargo vessel. Capture expected tomorrow. This was pretty incredible to watch in person, the video didn't really capture the way the sound felt.
