19. Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0 (Mike Pondsmith).
Hacerse mayor es, a todas luces, una mierda. Dejas de ver bien de cerca, te duele la espalda y vas perdiendo poco a poco el contacto con la gente. Pero a veces te resarces un poquito dándote algún capricho que de adolescente no te pudiste permitir. Ese es mi caso con Cyberpunk, un juego que siempre me llamó la atención pero que nunca tuve porque la paga daba por lo que daba y que finalmente llegó a mis manos como regalo por mi cuarenta y tantos cumpleaños. Leer un juego ambientado en un 2020 futuro tal y como se lo imaginaban en 1990 ahora que hemos ya no alcanzado sino sobrepasado esa fecha es una experiencia apasionante. Por un lado te encuentras con la ingenuidad en algunas predicciones (los móviles prácticamente no existen, Internet es algo muy ligado a terminales fijos, las noticias online se parece más a una BBS que a una web) pero por otro te deprimes al ver cómo han clavado la realidad distópica y tardocapitalista que nos ha tocado con unas corporaciones todopoderosas y una sociedad cada vez más desigual. El conjunto termina siendo un término medio bastante curioso entre el retrofuturismo y el cyberpunk. En el improbable caso de que llevase este juego a mesa no tengo ninguna duda de que lo haría con esta ambientación del 2020 en lugar de irme a la edición nueva que la ha avanzado hasta el 2045.

Cyberpunk 2020 memories:

Cyberpunk 2020 is a deadly game, characters usually do not survive for long. I would say that any character who survives 3 gaming sessions is considered long-lived. But then, one of my characters, who started out as a quickly made character for a short game survived.
So I played with him again, and again he survived. This just kept on happening, no matter how deadly the situation was, the dice were on his side, always.

His name was Silver Morgan, just a quick combo from Johnny Silverhand and Morgan Blackhand. He was a solo. He grew to be my most long lived character of any ttrpg, ever. He went to the moon, to a secret research base in Antarctic, broke violently out of jail several times, kidnapped corpos for breakfast. Broke others out of jail, and was owed favours from most international criminal groups. One time he broke into a casino run by the yakuza, killed every guard, took the local boss hostage, and hacked a massive vault door open with a katana.

In true cyberpunk fashion, Arasaka was his sworn enemy.

And he was a real bastard, someone who would stab anyone in the back if someone offered a good enough price. No other character in our gaming group would ever come even close to killing other player characters as much as he did. Not for lack of trying, eventually the other player characters were taking contracts to take him out, never succeeding.
It became a running joke to see how he would kill the other players.

Funnily enough, he finally lost his life after sneaking into an Arasaka tower in Night City. After filling almost every strategic point with military-grade explosives, he finally rolled a critical failure while planting explosives in the elevator shaft, bringing down the building, along with himself.

Since wrapping up Cyberpunk 2077 a few weeks ago, I’ve been reading through the rulebooks, comparing the differences between versions, It’s so fascinating how the video game uses characters and storylines dating back to the original 1988 game. I imagined the CD Projekt Red game would have been all new storylines and material, but they stuck pretty close to the original.

I have PDF copies of Cyberpunk 2020 (2nd edition, from 1990), Cyberpunk v3.0 (from 2005), and Cyberpunk Red (from 2020), and I’ve actually never read any of them until now. It’s the kind of TTRPG I’ve always wanted to play but never had anyone to run the game, so I’ve had the PDFs but never really dug into them.

I finished the Phantom Liberty storyline last night and the main world story today, and I’m really not sure what to think of this ending.

I really enjoyed the game, but I’m at a loss for words over how this ending makes me feel. Maybe a little confused? Perplexed? Perhaps dubious?

By the way: The #TTRPG originals #Cyberpunk2013 and #Cyberpunk2020 for #Cyberpunk2077 weren't about impressing any idiots in cool cars either (etc.). The #cyberpunk games were also comparatively deadly, bluntly running around and shooting everything was generally a shitty idea... #scifi

That's cool. One of my favorite #ttrpg designers (Mike Pondsmith) also took logo design, he told me once (He talked to me! :blob_cat_aww: ). Just a connection I was already thinking about because I wanted to say that one way my ad design interest has found a new outlet was for the #Cyberpunk2020 game (made by the aforementioned designer) I ran recently, so I got to make up fake ads for that game. I'll include one here for fun.

Fun stuff about that adventure (for anyone interested anyway): There's a reason that baby looks scared of Santa. It turns out that Santa was actually a robot in disguise (heh), controlled by a street gang comprised of clowns called the Bozos who used the event to take over the mall for their fiendish plot. Even the Free Presents were part of the plot. After they locked the place down, the head Bozo announced that 3 out of 4 of the presents contained something valuable, like cash, jewelry, etc. But 1 in 4 contained a bomb. He wanted to see how many people would open their present with those odds.

The baby was right. (Foreshadowing is fun!)

(I also did flyers for several of the stores in the mall, but this was the best one.)

What if Adam Smasher died in the Arasaka Tower bombing in 2023, and it's been constructs ever since? Perhaps AI, perhaps a soulkilled engram, controlling a straight up robot with no biological components left at all?

#PennedPossibilities 655 — What’s the most unusual source of inspiration you’ve found?

(Okay, I edited my post with my answer. I was too exhausted last night for any writing, even for just a quick prompt answer.)

This was such an interesting prompt. For the moment, I'll stick to the series I'm currently working on. I write in every genre, having written many different stories, and inspiration strikes at any moment.

Inspiration for this series, however, is quite a mind-blowing concept. Time to put my thinking cap on. It comes mostly from Blade Runner (an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and is set in a dystopian, futuristic Los Angeles in 2019). It was my first experience with the genre. The rest of my inspiration comes from decades of playing cyberpunk #TTRPG stuff, like #CyberpunkRED, #Cyberpunk2020, and my own homebrew games that fall within the genre. I'm actually a game master for TTRPGs, so all the hard, grueling work for my players is done (and created) by me. It's helped a ton. It made me fall in love with the genre. Combining that with SFF was a beautiful idea, and one that made everything fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. It worked out perfectly for me.

Inspiration strikes at the oddest of times and in the most interesting of places.

Oh, that's easy. For me, it was playing #CyberpunkRED, #Cyberpunk2020, and finally moving on to GM the games as well. The universe used in the homebrew games I've created is the same one featured in the novel. I love creating original universes, worlds, and stories.

Funny story, but it took shape all because I'm a game master who plays a lot of #Cyberpunk2020 and #CyberpunkRED with my players. Alexios was a character of my own creation from about 15 years ago. I painstakingly built an entire original universe around him from that one epic character idea, and now here we are and he has his own book series. I never gave up on him.

Unsere SC sind via Quantum-Transporter auf das Los Angeles der Arasaka Zeitlinie gewechselt. Die Infinity Patrol Basis vor Ort hat ihnen dann nahegelegt, zumindest eine Chipbuchse als Cyberware installieren zu lassen, was zu einigen Irritationen geführt hat. Welcher gesunde Mensch lässt sich freiwillig operieren, um sich mit Tech vollstopfen zu lassen?

#WordWeavers 2.26 — Do you draw inspiration from other characters? What are your greatest influences?

Oh, gosh. Heck yeah, I did for #TheCityOfOpulence. I draw inspo from a lot of things, but most notably #CyberpunkRED, #Cyberpunk2020, and #Cyberpunk2077. I created this character decades ago whilst playing cyberpunk #TTRPG's.

Some inspiration might have to be Takeshi "Tak" Kovacs from #AlteredCarbon, one of my favorite shows. My MC, Alexios Jace, has similarities to him. All coincidence, too.
