Variety: ABC Unveils New Twist for Live-Streamed News: Shows That Respond to Viewer Queries, Needs. “During a recent live-stream of ‘Searched’, a relatively new entry to the schedule of ABC News Live, Benitez, clad in bright white sneakers and a short sleeve shirt, offered followers different angles on top news stories — the ones they were asking about on their own. ‘Searched’ uses data from […]

NASA: Volunteer Develops Machine-Learning Tool to Identify Rare Clouds. “Certain kinds of clouds are misbehaving – appearing more often and lower in the sky than they used to. To help identify the factors influencing these changes (e.g. shifts in Earth’s long-term weather patterns), scientists have asked people around the world with cameras to submit fresh images of these clouds as a part […]

The Guardian: Meet the army of amateur archivists racing to save US history in national parks. “Hundreds of volunteers, many of whom are anonymous, have submitted photos of national signage to the digital archive. As of 3 August, the site has compiled 17,236 photos, including at least one in nearly every national park and historic site in the country.”

Best actual microblogging replacement for Twitter these days? (Not really seeking a particular "community" but basically the intellectual & age & emotional maturity opposite of Threads, which is just about the worst place on the internet now.
But I WANT character restriction for just vague little brain twitches…

Heritage Fund: Taking experiences with historic collections outside the archive’s walls. “Creating an archive about the fights for disability rights means thinking differently from the start. When we began creating the National Disability Movement Archive and Collection (NDMAC), we knew that preserving history was only part of the job. We also needed to think about how that history and […]

It sickens me a little to think of how hard I hustled the SMT factory to get the boards built, and the guys who worked overtime to hit our deadline. They did it gladly, and with great alacrity for just a couple hundred bucks. Then I look at the majority cut that Crowd Supply/Mouser commands and their opaque delay on fulfillment. It’s not fair to the workers, it’s not fair to me, and most importantly, it’s not fair to the backers.
I have to wonder what other channels could facilitate a project like this. What if @opencollective got into #crowdsourcing?

Vineyard Gazette: BioBlitz is a Competitive Creature Feature. “Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket have each conducted individual bioblitz’s in summers past, but when Sarah Bois of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation on Nantucket proposed an inter-Island event, members of the Vineyard’s BiodiversityWorks agreed that some healthy competition could go a long way.”

University of New Hampshire: Bystander videos are ‘fundamentally changing how the news is made’. “Just weeks before [Alex] Pretti’s death, Renee Good was shot and killed by federal agents during Operation Metro Surge, a large-scale ICE deployment in Minnesota. In the Good case, too, bystander videos analyzed by professional journalists contradicted the government’s account of the incident.”
