Gaming with my Daughter

Speaking of changes and of Wholesome Games, I am always looking for ideas on what I can play with our daughter or what I can let her play on her own once in a while.

She is not allowed to play anything with violence, anything that isn’t age-appropriate, or games with online interactions. It should also not be a game that uses predatory tactics to urge her to continue playing.

Her favourite game right now is “Bluey – Let’s Play” (the free mini games, not the expensive monthly subscription). She loves placing Bluey and Bingo in the kitchen and combining individual food items to create dishes. On PC, she loves playing the “Find All / Kittens” or the “Hidden Cats” series. Since hidden object games can foster concentration, I think these are good games for her to play. Of course, everything in moderation! Playing a video game is a highlight for her, not something she gets to do every day or all the time.

I was looking for a new game for her recently when I realized that I should probably dig through my Steam backlog first. What I found was Sticky Business. She can’t play it completely without help because fulfilling the orders is too difficult and she also can’t read what the customers are saying – though she isn’t interested in that anyway. Her favourite part is designing the stickers. So now we play together: I run the business side to earn the money and the hearts needed to unlock new items. And she is the one creating new stickers. It is a really nice way to do something together.

It reminds me a bit of my own childhood playing games on the C64 with my parents and my brother – namely, Summer Games and Winter Games. But there was also Create with Garfield, a game I loved that game so much!

While I don’t feel the need to purposefully create such memories with my daughter, it is still nice to be able to share this hobby with her.

So yeah, I am always open to suggestions for harmless fun games to play with small children.
