  2. Great summary in this op-ed of the recommendations from the #covidconsensus study published in Nature. Nearly 400 public health experts around the world in a rigorous process agreeing on where we need to go at this point. Spoiler: COVID is not over. And there are plenty of things that can be done to stop the spread and keep people safe.

I attach the four pillars of safety from @whn that show that we have many choices to get there by combining different levels of those pillars--it is technology adoption.

As much as I want the #COVID19 pandemic to be over, I can’t help but think this decision is somewhat premature as we head into a very challenging winter.
My advice: get vaccinated/boosted, stay alert & stay away from others if you feel unwell.🤞

  7. What to do about #Covid? Watch panel discussion & press briefing of this important #COVIDconsensus @Nature article with input from 386 global scientists nature.com/articles/s41586-022. 8. Not sure if this has been shared on Mastodon yet, but it was a real pleasure to participate in 'A multinational consensus to end the public health thread of covid', with Jeffrey Lazarus and just under 400 odd participants. Very high consensus for key recommendations, including vaccines plus, importance of airborne messaging, and society wide approaches. #COVIDconsensus

  11. Reading the @nature_bot #COVIDConsensus paper on ending the pandemic this morning.

On mis- and disinformation, the panel, led by Jeffrey V Lazarus, recommend:
    ▶️Monitoring
    ▶️Exposing
    ▶️Prebunking and debunking
    ▶️Considering holding publishers liable
▶️Social media controls to limit publication/ dissemination

    Do you agree?
Is there something missing, beyond long-term investment in media, digital and health literacy?

  12. Finally,
    - Governments shouldn’t impose broad civil liberties restrictions unless the situation is really, really dire.

I know that was a lot, but you made it. And it makes a lot of sense. That is the most well-grounded set of recommendations to get us out of this never-ending hell scape that is #COVID. So I add my endorsement to the #COVIDconsensus.

  13. I saved the big stuff for last. (Some editor is screaming that I buried the lede. Hush.)

Of the more than 380 experts involved in the #COVIDconsensus, “97% of the panel agrees that vaccination alone is insufficient to end the COVID-19 pandemic as a public health threat.”

  14. Next: The #COVIDconsensus addresses effective communication, which it says both individual governments and the WHO have not done well at. Let’t take a look at what it recommends:
    - Governments should monitor #COVID misinformation/disinfromation and expose networks of false info — and hold publishers of false info liable
    - Public health and other authorities should use clear, culturally appropriate/responsive messaging to combat false info
