Morning peeps! Heartwarming to see Jac today. He seems to have made sudden progress on the flight front. Rather than only being able to fly 20 metres or so, losing height all the way, he was able to fly from our firepit, up and over our roof, across several other roofs to chimney pots about 100 metre away and with other jackdaws, as tho he had never been wounded many weeks ago. Beginning to think Jac stands a great chance of making it through winter 😊💕

Oh, now I feel awful. Jac has just been fed. I stepped out of the back door and there he was, about 2m away and waiting <sigh>. Mealworms, peanuts and seed balls have been served anyway.. not just to Jac, but to the lot of them who have now turned up and are clattering and cawing on our roof
Time I had my much delayed first coffee!

Most of the crows wait till the moment I disappear inside before they appear. Something they always know instantly. Clearly they have spies in the branches overhead. So when I returned with a second mug of coffee, they took to the air and departed, leaving behind just Jac and his very sensitive and pretty best friend, who now trusts me as much as Jac does. Well that trust is how to earn extra peanuts! 😊💕

Aan de overkant van ons huis is een bosje, waar een grote groep roeken overnacht. Tegen de schemer komen ze allemaal in paren of kleine groepjes naar ‘huis’. Soms vliegen ze met z’n allen nog een paar rondjes voordat ze gaan slapen.

There are jackdaws aplenty in our backyard but very rarely do crows show up. Today I left out some cat food, dried worms and peanuts, which the jackdaws immediately descended upon. It seems the commotion caught the attention of a couple of doves and also this crow.

I wish I could provide the crows with a warmer place but crows need to keep moving to stay fed and warm.
I'm grateful they stop by to see me, or rather, know I'll provide them with food so it's best to keep me on one of their pitstops.

I wish I could give the magpies large nuts all the time. They all spend time contemplating how to get as many in their beak as they can. 3 days in a row with magpie swarms, though, like yesterday, it was only until they ate everything. With temp basically out as a reason, I am now focused on the details of rotating foraging hypothesis. I suspect their main foraging for the day is somewhere else, with my yard simply being a snack. They will be back to properly forage in a couple days
