"Twitter’s ownership transfer ... established the concept that growth for these networks happens as a result of people ‘leaving’ Big Tech platforms, and that decentralised open protocols are a recognisable alternative."

It certainly cemented it, but that dynamic had been recognised long before. Mastodon's growth, in particular, was driven by earlier waves of migration from Titter, Tumblr, and a few other platforms. Allowing it to overshoot GNU social.

'The fediverse is indeed clunky and nerdy, operated by hobbyists and idealists. It's one of the main powers that allows the network to sustain itself for so long. But I do feel that people who highlight this in an approving manner do not really grapple with the extent these same characteristics interfere with goals to make the fediverse a mainstream platform.' https://connectedplaces.online/reports/fediverse-report-141/ /via #ConnectedPlaces #fediverse #mastodon

"Above all, Connected Places is a newsletter about power. Centralised social media leads to power concentration at the very top, creating billionaire oligarchs. Decentralising social media takes power away from the oligarchs. But that does not mean that the power has disappeared. Power is spread out over many places, but with it, new gatekeepers can appear, in ways that can be hard to see."
