A backdoor cold front is moving south and will reach the mountains of southern New Mexico in the middle of the night.
This is a loop of images from a weather satellite, showing the last eight hours of air movement.
These are infrared images, and this band can detect the movement of different temperature air masses even if they are cloudless.
The right 1/3 of the frame shows a mass of cold air moving from top to bottom (north to south). The light blue lines show the borders of states such as Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
This backdoor cold front is not a very deep/thick mass of cold air, and in this case it doesn't have that much momentum. It will keep moving south because there is no high terrain, but it can't push west because of the high terrain along the 'central spine' of New Mexico'.

Although February is the #meteorologically last month of winter, there is currently a #coldfront over #Germany with unusually much #snow in #Berlin on the night to 02/14/2025. The further outlook also points to an unusually cold February due to polar air from the east. But despite this exception the trend towards warmer Feb. temperatures due to #globalwarming has been particularly noticeable since 2020 at the latest and reached a peak with the #warmthrecord in 2024.

#today (assuming that starts at midnight) kept the fire going all night in the woodstove, which is our backup for the heat pump that stops working at -14°F. Temps dropped to -19°F and stayed below heat pump range until almost 10am. Then slept all day! #PolarVortex #ColdFront #weather #Vermont
