Before both #Liechtenauer and #Fiore, in the late XIII century someone created a book teaching how to fight with #SwordAndBuckler (a small hand-held #shield): manuscript I.33. This is one of the oldest martial arts manuals in the world.

In it a priest teaches several students — and the last pages depict a woman taking up the weapons. Her name is given as #Walpurgis, which is why we sometimes call the book #CodexWalpurgis and regard her unofficially as the matriarch of HEMA.
