Published May 27, 2026"Temperature records are being smashed across Europe as parts of the continent swelter in a heat wave that is bringing extreme temperatures alarmingly early in the year.
"The continent is grappling with a powerful heat dome, a persistent high-pressure system which acts like a lid on a pot, trapping hot air and pushing it downward. It can remain in place for days or even weeks and is a weather phenomenon made more likely and more intense by human-caused climate change.
"On Monday, the UK endured its hottest May day on record, with temperatures spiking to 34.8 degrees Celsius (94.6 Fahrenheit) at #KewGardens in London, breaking the previous record by 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit). Usually heat records are broken by only fractions of a degree.
"Then, on Tuesday, the record was broken again, as temperatures soared to 35 degrees (95 Fahrenheit). The average high temperature for London in late May is around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).
"As the heat climbed Monday, a wildfire broke out near #ArthursSeat, a hill in #EdinburghScotland, and hundreds of properties in southeast England were left without #water as demand spiked.
"There was little respite overnight for the UK, which experienced a 'tropical night' where temperatures didn’t fall below 20 degrees (68 Fahrenheit).
"These temperatures may not sound extreme but are very uncomfortable — even dangerous — in the UK, where most houses are not insulated well enough to keep out heat and only around 5% of homes have air conditioning. A report last week from the UK’s Climate Change Committee warned the UK was 'built for a climate that no longer exists.' "

"It's official: England and Wales have seen their hottest-ever May days today - breaking records set just yesterday. The Met Office says that 35.1C was recorded in Kew Gardens, in London, with Cardiff's Bute Park seeing 32.9C.
"Ireland, too broke its May day record as temperatures at Shannon Airport edged into the 30s, with Met Éireann issuing yellow heat warnings across a number of counties into Wednesday.
"There's been little respite overnight, either, as restless sleepers in Kenley, London, saw 21.3C recorded last night.
"But this is the UK, so some areas are still chilly: In Shetland, tourists disembarking from a cruise ship were delighted by the sunny, 11C weather they found there.
"The extreme - and rare - heat, brought about by a so called '#HeatDome' that is encasing western Europe, is a sign of the fast-changing climate. Five days into the exceptional temperatures, NHS urgent care doctors are reporting more older patients in need of assistance. Calls to 999 are also ticking up.
"Elsewhere, authorities are warning bathers to be careful near water after four people died at English swimming spots over the bank holiday weekend.
"Fruit and vegetable farmers have warned that the heat is impacting crops, meaning they have to plan for how the changing climate affects their operations."

"The UK is breaking #heat and #rainfall records increasingly frequently as its climate continues to warm, the Met Office has warned.
"The country's changing weather patterns mean the UK now experiences a 'notably different' climate to what it was just a few decades ago, its State of the UK Climate report says.
"We now have many more very hot days and many fewer extremely cold nights, according to this latest assessment.
"It shows just how much #GlobalWarming caused by the vast emissions of #GreenhouseGases our civilisation creates is reshaping the country's climate.
"Climate change is bringing more #SevereWeather events like #storms and #flooding - and inevitably the country's changing climate is having an impact on the #NaturalWorld, with some species suffering.
"The report focuses on 2024, when the UK experienced its second-warmest February, warmest May, warmest spring, fifth-warmest December, and fifth-warmest winter since records began in 1884.
"The Met Office highlights that some of these records have already been surpassed in 2025 - more evidence of this trend towards more extreme weather.
"This summer many parts of the country are in the throes of their third heatwave with very warm weather reaching into #Wales, #NorthernIreland and #Scotland as well as southern #England."
