"Palace of Gold" was #LeonRosselson's response to the #Aberfan disaster. 59 years ago today, 116 children and 28 adults were killed a spoil heap collapsed at 9.15am, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and a row of houses.
The #AberfanDisaster happened because #NationalCoalBoard safety guidelines had been ignored and warnings dismissed. Rosselson's finest song lays bare the #classPolitics of disdain for the safety of #workingClass children.

This photo sums up so well how afraid those in power are of a single 26-year-old from their own demographic. That show of force isn't there to protect him or to keep him from getting away. It's a staged media event to remind you they will not be messed with and you better stay in your place. (Yeah, I know how that sounds but it's become too obvious to ignore.)

This, by @rbreich, confirms my view that right-wing populism is, in large part, the result of the left abandoning class struggle. I am fully aware that class is uncool in contemporary political discourse, but it remains very, very real.

It actually made a lot of sense, in the political climate of the 1980s and 90s, for the left to play up identity issues and focus less exclusively on class. For one thing, the existing traditions of working class solidarity politics *did* need to be hauled out of the 19th century. They did need to come to terms with the fact that certain identity markers (eg being a PoC, homosexual etc) push people further down class hierarchies.
