A few others:

Sia 'Some People Have Real Problems' - this was Sia Furler at her most melancholy and nailed it with the opening 5-6 tracks, particularly the first two tracks of Little Black Sandals and Lentil.

And a cheeky half-joking mention for Arcade Fire 'Funeral' - yes this was a great debut album but the four-part Neighbourhood that makes up the A-side is what launched them onto the global scale.

Tonight I'm reminded of albums that front-loaded all of their good songs and left the back half with a lot to be desired:

Bloc Party 'Silent Alarm' - Helicopter, Banquet, She's Hearing Voices all in the first 6 tracks. Who even listens to anything after that point?

HAIM 'Days Are Gone' - Falling, The Wire, If I Could Change Your Mind in tracks 1-4 then a lot of filler, although the final track on the album is a saving grace.

Massive Attack 'Mezzanine' - yes I know this album is great overall but the opening quadrant of Angel/Risingson/Teardrop/Inertia Creeps is unstoppable.

The Jungle Giants 'Quiet Ferocity' - pop band from Brisbane, all of their excellent singles in the first 5 tracks. This album (well, the A-side) was everywhere in 2017 when it released.

Now scrolling through my media library looking for other examples.

The man, the myth, the legend gets last spin of the night.

Truly one of the greatest songwriters to ever walk the Earth, and a flawless album front to back.
It’s actually quite embarrassing.
There isn’t a song on this record that’s not great.
Not GOOD…
GREAT.

A true one of a kind talent the likes we’ll never see or hear again.

If you’ve never seen it, go on YouTube and watch his final appearance on Letterman.
Zevon was dying, and Dave gave him the WHOLE show that night.

Even on death’s door, he performed immaculately, and in the interview was funny, self-deprecating and fully the Warren we’ve always known.
It’s a remarkable and incredibly emotional watch.

Excitable boy, they all said.

He sure was.

Just the greatest.

This week's #TuneTuesday theme is #UnexpectedWhiplash - songs that start one way and then change. There are so many great ones people are mentioning.

The first one that came to mind for me is Helmet's 'Wilma's Rainbow' from their 1994 record Betty. It's the intro track too, it start everything off.. Page is doing this kinda simple, chill guitar thing first, a couple times, and then the guitar, bass, and drums hit you full on in the fucking FACE. And then at the end, after the most insane solo you've ever heard, it has a false ending. Perfection. And then the REST of the record. 🤯

Father/son music day today, and this was my boy’s request while we do some work around the house.

This is my son’s newest obsession. It’s an album he’s been playing A LOT over the last month, and he was unaware that I had it on vinyl.

Which leads me to believe it will disappear from my collection and end up in his VERY SOON.

It’s an absolute masterpiece album; a modern #abstract #HipHop clinic with NO SKIPS, courtesy of the late great MF DOOM and Madlib.

Glad that my son has finally started to sink his teeth (and mind) into it.

A few years ago, I took him and a few of his friends to the MOPOP Museum in Seattle, where they had the mask on display in a glass case inside the hiphop exhibit. He had no idea what it was, who Doom was, and was instantly mystified.

Note-perfect, timeless masterpiece.

Give me a choice of one NON rock record to take to a desert island, and it might have to be this.

Also, even with all the GREAT #psych #garage and #psychedelic classic rock from the decade, THIS is my favorite 60s album of all time.
