Chaka Khans ”ck” från 1988 är sångerskans sjunde album. Det är en ganska lågmäld skiva och innehållet är huvudsakligen en mix av soul, pop, jazz och funk.
Här finns två Prince-relaterade låtar. Vi har ”Eternity”, som han ursprungligen skrev till Sheena Easton, här i en cover-version utan ytterligare medverkan från honom. ”Eternity” är en ganska ordinär ballad, som även i händerna på en så fantastisk sångerska som Chaka Khan inte förmår lyfta riktigt.
”Sticky Wicked” har mestadels Prince själv på produktion och instrumenten, samt med ett inhopp av Miles Davis på trumpet (Apropå Prince och Miles tidigare nämnda samarbeten..).
”Sticky Wicked” är ett spännande spår. När jag hör det tänker jag på både hip hop och Miles Davis skiva ”On the corner”. Som stomme har ”Sticky Wicked” en trummaskin som spelar en rytm som närmast påminner om boom-bap samt en djup bas som helt saknar melodisk funktion och istället mest rumlar runt i väldigt låga register. Ovanpå det leker ett disonant och jazzigt blåsarrangemang av Eric Leeds och Atlanta Bliss samt orgel, retsam gitarr och syntar som befinner sig både långt fram och långt bak i ljudbilden. Uppsättningen påminner om ”Housequake” eller ”Telepathy”. Chaka Khan snarare rappar än sjunger texten om en kvinna, ”Sticky Wicked”, som lever glamoröst – men det är ett liv utan mening. ”Sticky Wicked” är en karaktärsbeskrivning – hon är ”caramel coated” men tom inuti. Som vanligt tycker Prince att vi bör hitta Gud.
Visst kan man önska att en så fantastisk sångerska som Chaka Khan fick mer av en melodi att jobba med, men deras samarbete har ändå resulterat i ett väldigt coolt spår.
Miles Davis bidrag då? Jo han har flera solon på ”Sticky Wicked” och bidrar till svänget med sin trumpet. Miles spelar med sordin och hans fraser spelas huvudsakligen mot Princes gitarrslinga. Min favoritsekvens av låten är ungefär i mitten när Prince beatboxar under Miles solo. Ett litet smakprov på vad de hade kunnat åstadkomma om de fått chansen att jobba mer ihop.
