  6. Dome with a View

I stopped halfway across the Millennium Bridge and pointed the camera north, which turned out to be the same thing roughly nine thousand other people were doing that afternoon. I looked behind me and there was another group of tourists with their phones raised taking much the same photo I have here. St. Paul's Cathedral was in the background but I was interested in the people, contrasting the ever-present building with the steady stream of humanity flowing past me.

If you ask someone from the UK for the name of an architect there’s a good chance they’ll say Christopher Wren. Best known for St. Paul’s Cathedral, and rebuilding after the 1666 Fire of London, designing over 50 churches.

Taken from London, ed. Charles Knight; Tufts has it in TEI XML but no download link i could find. Hah! I have the physical book to scan!

This is a 180 degree #vertorama of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe - a #ChristopherWren church in the city. It's so-called because its first structure was by the Royal Wardrobe - where in 1361 Edward III moved his store for clothes and armour.

That burned down in the Great Fire, Christopher #Wren built the replacement. That was bombed, but restored and reopened in 1961.

    I used a DIY 360 degree panorama mount on a tripod to hold an #Olympus EM1iii with a Laowa 7.5mm F2.

  17. You've got to love Roach Stone - it's a facies (variety) of the famous Portland Stone (a Jurassic limestone) that many of the public buildings in London are built from. Christopher Wren made Portland Stone famous when he used it to build the new St Paul's Cathedral in London after the Great Fire. OK, so he had shares in the quarry...

The stone is full of fossil shells - the pointy ones are the famous 'Portland Screws'.

  18. Sir Christopher Wren did not train as an architect as a person would now - the profession as we understand it today did not exist. Rather, it was a branch of applied mathematics, and something well educated gentlemen might take up as a hobby. When he first went to university in Oxford, Wren was studying Latin and Philosophy.

  19. 1/5 City churches This week I'm sharing a set of snaps from a walk round some City of London churches. This is St Stephen Walbrook.

It is one of the many City churches designed by #ChristopherWren after the Great Fire of #London in 1666.

    I like a good #dome.

    four-thirds 7-14mm f4, mmf3 adapter, Olympus EM1iii for those who care.

  20. Died #OTD 1723, Sir Christopher Wren. The architect is famed for his rebuilding of St Paul's Cathedral, and was actually responsible for designing the galleries in the 18th c. Commons chamber. But #DYK that Wren was also an MP? Read his bio here: ow.ly/rYOr50DwQe4
