My mobility requirements being precise, I ended up becoming an early adopter of an overtly badged Chinese EV.
Applying legacy badges to Chinese vehicles (MG, Volvo, MINI) is immoral and insulting in my eyes, despite being entirely lawful. Instead, Jaecoo and BYD are what they say they are.
That is just me though. Great Wall Motors make the MINI electric range but also my Ora. Although not the same car rebadged, they share competence, design, quality control etc. So it is fascinating that the reassuring label brings fifty times more sales.
For sure there are things like BMW drive tuning, dealership network etc. but the dominant factor is brand recognition. That worked hugely in my favour financially.
Another fascinating insight is that the Ora is seen as 'girly'. Real men slammed it in reviews. Women fell in love with it. Had a pink version been available, I probably would have gone with that.
