  1. @pvonhellermannn Black currant jam is soo delicious.
In the past, I was really successful with a dry, black currant red wine. Since northern Germany is not prime country for red grape varieties for full-bodied red wines, I thought black currants might be the way to go.
    Well, until yesterday...
Let's hope for new varieties so the two of us can keep our favourite morning delight.
According to the TV program, it took 15 years to breed off 500 of 2000 #ChillingHours though.

  2. Thanks, @jblue that is very helpful!
With a quick internet research, I was able to find four of the varieties from the article in German plant retail. Anna and Ein Shemer are not among them, but they apparently are from Israel. I'm not sure about all climate zones there (chill in elevated areas?), but they should do with few #ChillingHours.
Some of the varieties are available in British plant retail. After Brexit, this would mean, I'd have to smuggle them out of the country.

  3. #ClimateDiary #gardening
Just watched Landward and learned, that #BlackCurrants need 2,000 h of below 7°C to develop a good crop with uniform ripening. This is a problem for farmers in Scotland today as it's not cold enough any more - in Scotland!
    Similar applies to #apples and 1,000 #ChillingHours below 6°C.
