I recently finished reading Ron Chernow's biography of George Washington. Excellent. A couple things they don't teach you to in school.
1. The hardships at Valley Forge were directly caused by the colonies not paying for the war.
2. The main founders did not trust each other, spied on others, and at times, petty and jealous.
3. They all had blind spots when it came to blacks. None were close to perfect.
Highly recommended.

@beforewewerewhite I always love comparing today to yesterday... or 150 years ago. It just so happens I'm in the middle of #Chernow #Grant - and there's an explanation for why the poorer counties in appalachia were pro-union. Seems that very few rich people owned slaves, and they were concentrated in the nicer parts of the mason-dixon states. The rural areas were more ambivalent, and not enjoying the "benefits" of a slave economy. Grant used this to his advantage as Lt. Gen.
