  2. NGC 281 - the Pacman Nebula in Cassiopeia. A return to a familiar object, this time with a new setup and considerably more integration time. In the Hubble palette (HSO), the dark Bok globules stand out with particular clarity - dense dust structures being eroded by the radiation pressure of the young cluster IC 1590, while possibly hiding new star formation deep within.

  3. #PhotoOfTheDay: Composite image of the #Cassiopeia A (or Cas A) supernova remnant

The Cassiopeia A supernova remnant glows in X-ray, visible, and infrared light in this Jan, 2024, image that combines data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble, Webb, and Spitzer space telescopes.

  4. If you've ever wondered what sort of #chaos, we get up to in our #PopCulture episodes...

Here's a little taste of our Wish Upon a Star segment where we take over the brand and propose what we *wish* existed in "pop culture" (broadly defined)...

  5. Weil ich verpeilt bin habe ich eine Karte für #Pogendroblem am 05.02. im #Cassiopeia in #Berlin abzugeben. Ist ausverkauft und wäre schade, wenn die Karte verfällt.

  6. Well -- I can't see Queens for #MythologyMonday and *not* talk about the most famous #queen in the #constellations -- Cassiopeia!

Queen Cassiopeia's claim to fame is that time she boasted about being more beautiful than the (50!!) Nereids & was promptly punished by Poseidon by way of flood/sea monster.

  7. The autumn Milky Way - east Cassiopeia and Perseus.

This monochrome image was taken through a blue filter to enhance the appearance of dark dust features in the star fields.

The second graphic is a sky simulation in planetarium software. The red wire frame box shows the coverage of the photograph.

The third graphic shows the frame coverage in the context of a larger portion of the night sky.

  8. The autumn Milky Way shows its interstellar dust better with a blue filter.

I only have a small size blue filter, so I'm only shooting with wide or normal lenses. Once I get a larger filter for the telephoto lenses, I'll get closer looks at various features.

  9. Near infrared can make Milky Way photos uniform and bland.

This telephoto shot with an 850 nanometer long pass filter was looking at a part of the west Cassiopeia (autumn) Milky Way that was interesting in visible light. Dark clouds blotted out portions of the star clouds.

In near infrared that effect is almost totally eliminated, so you get a uniform star field that has much less obscuration from interstellar dust. (So tonight, I'm shooting in blue light that will accentuate dust lanes.)

  10. The autumn Milky Way in western Cassiopeia.

The central area of the frame is looking at an area with noticeable amounts of interstellar dust. The stars have a yellowish tint compared to the rest of the frame.

The second image is a very close crop of the right edge of the full frame. It shows two small areas that are devoid of stars.

(Some red nebulosity is faintly visible in patches along the lower edge of the first image. This camera is not modified for astrophotography, so the red light of hydrogen is not captured well.)

The third and fourth graphics, from planetarium software, show the coverage of the frame and the location of the frame in the context of a large portion of the night sky.

  11. Lost in Space.

A wide field view of the autumn Milky Way from the tail end of Cygnus on the left, to Perseus on the right.

With so many stars captured in this photo, it's hard to see familiar constellations. But you can see the Andromeda galaxy as a small oval near the upper edge of the frame. (Dark, indistinct silhouettes along the lower left edge of the frame are the shadows of a couple trees.)

The second graphic is a sky simulation from planetarium software. The red wire frame box shows the coverage of the photo in the context of a very large portion of the sky.

  12. A portion of the autumn Milky Way in Cassiopeia.

Essentially no nebulosity, only star clouds, dark clouds, and a handful of small star clusters.

[Edit/add: at the middle of the very top edge of the frame I caught the starburst galaxy IC 10.]

See the 4th photo, which is a close crop of the first photo with blue lines bracketing the galaxy.

"IC 10 is the only known starburst galaxy in the Local Group of galaxies."

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IC_10

This monochrome image is panchromatic - all wavelengths of visible light from violet to deep red.

  13. A rich star field in the Milky Way between Cassiopeia and Perseus.

The upper right corner has the Double Cluster while the central part of the frame is a mashup of dark clouds and glowing nebulosity.

This monochrome image is panchromatic. It's all colors of visible light from violet to deep red.

The second graphic is a sky simulation from planetarium software that identifies some of the features in the photograph.

The third graphic shows the coverage of the photo in the larger context of the autumn sky near the north celestial pole.

  14. Москва – CASIOпея. Вспоминаем уникальный винтажный ноутбук Cassiopeia FIVA MPC-102

  15. Cassiopeia - or at least everybody's favorite W-shaped asterism in that constellation.

The autumn Milky Way runs right through that W.

This was taken with an 85mm lens and APS-C camera.

The second graphic shows some of the star clusters in this photograph. Caroline's Rose cluster (NGC 7789) is in the extreme upper right corner and impossible to miss.

  16. Went out to look for #aurora here in #Austin. Thought I could see a faint pink tinge to the north sky, but it's a trick of light. Too much light pollution, even on the edge of town. (Cedar Park be trippin')
But I *did* see #Orion for the first time this season! The old man finally made an appearance. And #Cassiopeia and the Seven Sisters! Winter sky is the best sky.

  21. #KnowledgeBit: In November 1572, Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was among those who noticed a new bright object in the constellation #Cassiopeia who thought it to be a new Star.

Astronomers now know that Tycho's new star was not new at all. Rather it signaled the death of a star in a supernova. It is now named after Tycho as "The Tycho Supernova".
