  22. Recensione “I Origins” (2014)

    Raramente mi sciolgo in lacrime davanti a un film. Certo, succede che ogni tanto abbia gli occhi lucidi, amo da morire quando ho la pelle d’oca, ma piangere è un evento più unico che raro. Il nuovo film di Mike Cahill, che già mi aveva emozionato con Another Earth, è riuscito nell’impresa di farmi passare l’ultima mezzora con i brividi fin sopra i capelli e i titoli di coda tra lacrime copiose. Un consiglio: per favore evitate di guardare il trailer e fidatevi sulla parola, se potete (incredibile come in due minuti e mezzo possano riuscire a rovinare e ad anticipare tutte le sorprese del film). Come nella pellicola precedente Cahill ci regala un altro bellissimo gioiello di fantascienza d’autore, dove a dominare la scena sono gli esseri umani e le loro emozioni (accompagnate dalle composizioni, particolarmente calzanti, dei Radiohead).

    Ian Gray, studente di dottorato, sta svolgendo ricerche sull’evoluzione dell’occhio umano, elemento anatomico assolutamente unico in ogni individuo mai esistito. La sera di Halloween, durante una festa, si innamora degli occhi di una misteriosa ragazza mascherata la quale, dopo aver sedotto il ragazzo, fugge via nella notte. Nei giorni seguenti una serie di strane coincidenze conduce Ian dalla ragazza di quella sera, Sofi, con la quale comincia immediatemente una relazione passionale e appassionata, nonostante la differenza di mentalità tra i due: lui è uno scienziato ateo che basa tutto ciò in cui crede sui fatti, sulle prove; lei invece ha un’anima spirituale, sognatrice, che crede in tutto ciò che sfugge all’umana comprensione. Un incidente porterà Ian a rivoluzionare le sue certezze, minate da una scoperta che cambierà per sempre la sua vita.

    Il tema portante del film è la contrapposizione tra scienza e fede, tra un universo basato sui fatti e un altro che vive di sensazioni, di connessioni prive di una vera logica. Il giorno in cui Ian e la sua assistente di laboratorio Karen scoprono che un verme cieco ha nel dna le caratteristiche per sviluppare la vista, Sofi parla della possibilità di trovare una luce dopo una vita avvolta dal buio: qui in realtà la ragazza sta parlando allo spettatore, ci sta dicendo di prepararci all’incredibile, perché è semplicemente qui che il dramma più avanti darà spazio alla fantascienza, lasciandoci totalmente inermi di fronte all’emozione. Se c’è un regista sul quale punterei tutti i miei soldi, questo è Mike Cahill. Il suo film metterà d’accordo atei e credenti: lasciatevi trascinare.
