The Caerleon pipe burial is a second-century Roman grave associated with the legionary fortress and settlement Isca Augusta in Caerleon. In 1927 building works across the River Usk from the fortress uncovered a grave containing a stone-lined tomb. Within the tomb was a lead canister containing cremated bone fragments, a piece of linen bearing traces...

A while ago I had the long-overdue pleasure of visiting #Caerleon and the National #Roman Legion Museum near Newport: I'd worked on finds from there as a student at Cardiff University so I was quite excited to go, 13 years after first meaning to. (Shush.)

It's a beautiful #museum, guys. With a really lovely Roman garden reconstructed out back, too! I liked the variety of finds on display, the interpretation, how light and airy the space felt.

If you're ever in South #Wales you should stop by.

Most amazing fact, Roman legion had mandatory pension and also catered for AVCs!!

When did pensions become universal in UK? 🤦‍♂️

Caerleon, Newport and Cardiff were not hotbeds of Welsh speakers, so little practice for Cymraeg. 😢

The biggest disappointment, was seeing the vandalism of the old college.

So true, which is why I make a point of going to a local coffee shop to engaging in real conversations with strangers and often with friends.
This morning a young lad, probably early 30s with camping equipment strapped to his back stopped off for breakfast in #Penclawdd while on his Wales Coastal Walk, #Chester to #Caerleon. Over 700 miles done and about 170 miles left. He tells me he needed to ditch tech and his unfaithful girlfriend, so decided to embark on a #BucketList task.
