  1. California’s Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043) is so broad and worded vaguely enough that it could have a chilling effect on open source in California (perhaps enforceable in other regions).

    What's worse is that nobody with a background in open source and understanding of how it works spoke for open source! Newsom (the bastard) is open to feedback, and there is a tight ass deadline of January 2027 before this bill becomes active in California.

    July 7, 2027 is the deadline for existing installs to be altered in order to satisfy the requirements of AB 1043 (again too broad and hard to figure out the full ramifications right now).

    MidnightBSD is the only distribution that I am aware of that actively stated they'll exclude California residents from installing or using their distribution. As the AB 1043 bill is so fucking broad, and will actively harm open source due to the lack of absolute clarity.
