  1. This is a very thorough description of a bug detected in a Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP) library used by a blockchain. If you are interested in how modern ZKPs work, this article gives a condensed overview of what is happening in a ZKP, and what the security guarantees are. As always, the devil is in the details, and in this case, a missing verification allowed an attacker to prove anything they wanted.

I always liked Anthropic's stance of doing the good thing and setting standards with regards to security and ehtics in LLMs. Unfortunately they changed their mind and will now only define 'goals that we will openly grade our progress towards'. So these goals will be non-binding. At least they kept the rules of 'no AI controlled weapons' and 'no mass domestic surveillance'.

  8. Finland is combatting Fake News at its destination. It teaches media literacy in schools, starting from the age of three, on through the whole curriculum of the students. This approach is paying off, with the country ranking at the top of the European Media Literacy Index. Meanwhile, here in Switzerland, students are mostly left to figure out for themselves what is real and what is fake.

  10. Why do we measure LLM agents? What do we measure? What are the normal values?

    - Julia Bazinska, Senior Research Engineer, Lakera AI
    - Prof. Martin Jaggi, Head of Machine Learning and Optimization Laboratory, EPFL
    - Mark Müller, Co-Founder and CTO, LogicStar AI
    - Lea Strohm, Senior Technical Product Manager, Thomson Reuters

Moderated by Imad Aad from C4DT (who is a bit nervous :)

    #C4DT_EPFL #epfl

  11. Lea Strohm from Thomson Reuters on "Building Trust in Agentic Systems".

Interesting high-level thoughts about LLM agents and things that is not a big problem for programmers, but not good for others, which are not used to "my computer is only doing what I ask it and it's normal for it to fail". This includes lawyers, but also policy makers, and of course news agencies which want to make sure they have correct information.

It's "TR" - never heard that abbreviation before...

  12. Mark Müller is up next, from LogicStar AI. He talks about "Code Agents in the Real World". Here is his take on the definition of an "AI Agent".

Quite close to my favorite: "An AI Agent is an LLM in a loop interacting with tools"...

    #C4DT_EPFL #epfl

  13. Julia Bazinska from Lakera (gandalf.lakera.ai/baseline) is up next.

AI Chatbots increase the attack surface, which give a bunch a different issues. So far it's mostly "screenshot attacks", where bad outputs of the bots are shown.

Now AI Agents increase the attack surface even more. And can do actual harm to your environment.

It's all the fault of the MCPs :) de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_Co

  14. Nils Amiet from Kudelski is helping us to install cryptocurrency miners on our phones :) Just ask the audience to scan a code to answer some questions. I asked myself why my phone is running so hot...

He talks about agents quadrupling the lines of code / week, and multiplying by 10 the vulnerabilities generated. Nice!

  15. Happy to be at the "Anticipating the Agentic Era: Assessing the Disruptions by AI Agents".

Looking forward to a set of nice and interesting talks!

  17. Francesca Falzon is closing off the talks. Audience still going strong :)

Nice #C4DT_EPFL topic on how to design privacy preserving protocols for private set intersection. Specifically what questions you need to ask...

  18. Together with Clement Humbert from #SICPA and @elgharee from #C4DT_EPFL we're happy to present our "Taxonomy of Digital Identity Systems" article here:

    eid-privacy.github.io/wp1/2025

If you're confused with all the technology in the current #e_id systems like #Swiyu, have a look at it, and let us know if it helped you understand the system choices better!

  20. As the speed that articles can be generated has increased with the rise of LLMs, Wikipedia just increased the speed it can delete them. If an article has obvious signs of having been created by an LLM, it can be deleted quickly with only two approvals. I think this is a good way of making sure that the articles on Wikipedia are high quality: remove the slop (bad quality text) as fast as possible.

  21. It was fun discussing with the #EPFL #RSE community how we can be part of the Open Research Data efforts to use Data Management Plans where it makes sense. Thanks to all attendees, special shout out to @dubochet, Chiara, Valérian for leading the discussions. And thanks to #C4DT_EPFL for sponsoring the pizzas :)

  22. I like this insight into how a cybersecurity company works to defend against adversaries trying to infiltrate them. According to this article, one of the most important attack vector is job applicants who want to infiltrate the company. Which of course makes sense, now that other attacks become more difficult, going back to the good old spy game is again easier! I also like the fact that they team up internally to counter these attacks.

  23. @ghuerlim @epfladmin @madelenat After two years, a dream comes true :)

I'm very happy to see that we have an official server at EPFL now. We even beat ETHZ to it :)

Now we need to populate it with good content... I'll start pinging my team at #C4DT_EPFL to also use it.

  24. Last week I was on holidays and didn't read my emails. Coming back to work today I found an email from Innosuisse, a CH agency to support innovation. Together with one of our partners, SICPA, and supported by Alliance, we handed in a grant request in December entitled "Secure and Privacy-Preserving Credentials for E-ID".

The grant got accepted, now we have the funding for 1.5 FTE for an RSE for one year! And SICPA will match this.

Gotta fill out some more forms now, I hope we can soon start actually working on it :)

  28. Did a small presentation of the E-ID summary slides at today's DigiGes meeting in Lausanne. Nearly the same as yesterday, but without the nerf-guns. So we had more time to present it :)

You can find the slides here. In the same repo you can find the hands-on workshop with the Jupyter-notebooks we used.

  29. Sometimes you build, sometimes you have to say goodbye. This article gives a summary of some of the things we've built at #C4DT_EPFL , and things we're saying goodbye.

Some blockchain, some peer-to-peer machine learning, and a tor-library for mobile devices!

  30. I'm very happy to have a new version of #fledger, the #decentralized system in your #browser !

To join the network, all you need to do is to point your browser to the following url:

    web.fledg.re

And off you go, participating in a decentralized network. No need to install any binary, proxies, whatever. Even though you can also run it as a binary on a server.

Currently there is a blackboard where you can post messages, and a simple web-proxy service which allows to use another node to send GET requests.

We have a semester-student project at #C4DT_EPFL together with #DEDIS to add a #mix_network. I'm curious how this will work with the web-proxy.

  31. Max Schrems is coming to EPFL! C4DT invited him for the 11th of March. The talk will be moderated by Melanie Kolbe-Guyot from C4DT.

  32. Another #article from our weekly meetings at #C4DT_EPFL / #Factory (we have some backlog :). This time it is a short introduction to #Kademlia. And an interpretation that seems more logical to me.

Currently I'm working on an implementation of this in #Rust for my #fledger project. And I'm learning even more Rust, which is great!
