There are lies, damn lies, and then there is the eternal Home Office press release โ updated for the age of Blue Labour, Tory one-upmanship and Reform UKโs five-year fantasy. By Lawson Akhigbe
Yet the political theatre continues as if the data never arrived. Immigration remains the ultimate litmus test, the issue on which every faction must prove its manhood by sounding harsher than the last. -

The Ancient Art of Buying Silence: How Rulers Have Always Turned Critics into Courtiers by Lawson Akhigbe
Political co-optation is not a Nigerian invention. It is one of the oldest and most elegant tools in the authoritarian toolkit far more refined than the crude business of jailing poets or shooting journalists. Why break a manโs spirit when you can simply rent it? Offer him a title, a salary, a motorcade, and watch the moral thunder turn into polite applause. History is littered with the wreckage of principles that met a well-timed appointment. -

Make a Game of Life
In North Loup, Nebraska, where I spent my boyhood summers with my grandfather, the television pulled one signal out of the sky, channel 10/11, and when the picture dissolved into snow the day still had eight hours left in it. A boy in a town like that learns the oldest technology on earth. Boredom is a raw material. A long afternoon wants shape, and shape comes from rules: the stick is a bat because we agree it is, the crack in the walk is a foul line because we say so, the score matters because we decide it matters. Nobody sold us that afternoon. We manufactured it ourselves, on the spot, out of dust and agreement, and the dust became the best part of the summer. [โฆ] -

Waxing Moon
Pluto, Neptune, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus Retrograde
Cloudy and cool
Happy New Week! I canโt believe weโre halfway through September already.
You can read the Community Tarot Reading for the Week here. The cards tell a very specific story this week, which is interesting.
I was out the door on time on Friday morning. I wore black, in honor of 9/11. The firehouse in Cheshire had a chair out front with a turnout coat, boots, and helmet, in honor and memoriam.
I parked in the Pittsfield lot I know, paid the fee (which made me grumpy โ I shouldnโt have to pay to park for a meeting Iโm forced to have), and walked the few blocks to the meeting. I was early, of course, but the person I was meeting with was ready early, so that was all good. She was very nice, and helpful. We went through the paperwork. All the paperwork they sent me that I filled out and faxed over at the beginning of the month is . . .irrelevant. So why did they have me waste the hours filling it out? They need some more (different) paperwork, but thereโs someone from that office who will be in North Adams this morning, so Iโm meeting them as soon as I post this and going through it with them. I still wonโt hear the decision for several weeks.
It was exhausting, but at least I was out of there by late morning. Barrington Stage took over the building where Witch Slapped used to be on North Street. I didnโt realize they expanded to a third space. Good for them (although I do miss Witch Slapped). I stopped at Adams Fresh Market on the way back to pick up and pie and some apple cider doughnuts. I love apple cider doughnut season!
Went to CVS to get things sorted out (for the moment) there around my momโs prescriptions. At least I got the necessary medications for my mom.
My momโs been moving between pain and discomfort, and we are doing the best we can.
I customized the CSA box Iโm picking up tomorrow, and Iโm looking forward to the goodies. Weโre getting Bok choy again, which is a favorite.
Got an extension until end of day yesterday for the ghostwriting, because there was very little left in the tank. I could have tried to work until midnight Friday, but that would be a bad idea.
Looked over the grant application for the state arts grant. I need to prepare some statements for it that are different from what Iโve used for other grant proposals. Thereโs another grant Iโd like to apply to by the middle of October, too, and I have to figure that one out. I did not have enough in the tank to begin either grant on Friday.
The day felt very heavy, with lots of grief. This anniversary hit hard, partially because people are encouraged to be cruel, and if it happened now, it would be just shrugged off by this administration, and the city told they โdeservedโ it. I mean, That Thing couldnโt even give the reading of the names at the Pentagon commemoration any dignity or attention. He fell asleep.
Didnโt get far on the ghostwriting. Slogged through some email. Iโd fallen behind last week. Read the short anthology story again and Iโm still in love with it. Gave it a few tweaks. Now it needs a snazzy title, but I was too tired to come up with one on Friday.
Once I have the title, Iโll give it a quick polish and get it out the door, hopefully this week. Yes, itโs way ahead of the deadline, but I want it off my desk and onto theirs!
I hope I hear where we are on the other three anthologies Iโm supposedly in that come out over the next few months.
I made salmon for dinner. I used a variation on a crockpot recipe that we really liked, but baked it in the oven instead. I used miso soup mix (taking out the tofu cubes) with honey and a little lemon juice. I put that over the salmon and baked it at 425F for 20 minutes. It turned out really well. Itโs good to know I can use it in the crockpot or in the oven.
Read a little bit in the evening.
I actually slept through the night โuntil a neighbor illegally smoked in their apartment and set off my fire alarm at 4 AM. And now the damn thing chirps every 30 seconds. I have it muffled as best I can.
I almost got a good nightโs sleep!
Up early and out the door to get my mom some more liquid Tylenol. This time, I got the โextra strengthโ โ I had to go to a totally different store to get it.
Willa was running around and knocked over something that then flipped over the water bowl in the kitchen, so there was a lot of cleanup this morning.
When I went outside to water, I found two very long brass screws neatly set out on the floor. I have no idea what they came from. They didnโt just fall out of something. So whoโs been on my back deck, and what have they been taking apart? I have to have a conversation with maintenance this week.
Creepy.
I made two batches of vegetable stock in the slow cooker. I had to get rid of all the bags of veg bits, or there wasnโt room in the freezer for the Cornish hen for the Equinox. You gotta grab the hens when you see them, because most places donโt carry them, at least not regularly.
I had trouble concentrating when I tried to read. I worked on some of the paperwork for today. I meant to do some ghostwriting, but I actually fell asleep for a bit in the afternoon and didnโt get it done.
Heated up some leftovers for dinner. Went to bed early. Woke up on Sunday a little after midnight, and went back to sleep to the sound of rain. Slept until nearly 6.
Morning routine was fine. I played with some ideas for titles for the short story.
Took out the garbage, did some morning chores. Did the tarot reading for the week, which is here.
As the weeks progress, we have some more complex wound care for my mom, but she seems to be healing well, in spite of the pain. My hand is healing fairly well, although Iโm going to have to trim a skin flap that should have been sewn down. But I only have to bandage the finger right at the cut now, and it doesnโt re-open. Progress.
I did another pass on the anthology story, and picked a title. I did several rounds of revisions on it, changing a confusing name, tightening some language, etc., and got it out the door.
It was a dreary, rainy day. I made soup for lunch.
It was later than I hoped before I turned to the ghost writing, which seems to be the story of my life lately. Yes, I recognize the pattern, and whatโs under it.
I got some decent work in, though.
Cooked a chicken stew with dumplings for dinner. The dumplings were a little dense. I think I will use a hand mixer next time, to try and get a little air in them. But, overall, it was good.
Went to bed early. Woke up 2 hours later, got back to sleep, slept through until 5. Morning routine was fine, and I got some stuff sorted out.
Did some paperwork, including a fax to the doctorโs office to try to get the double appointment next week sorted out. Everything has to be in writing, because you canโt trust anything they say without a paper trail. Caught up on some email.
Headed out to the library when the opened to drop off/pick up books and send the fax. Of course, the fax at the doctorโs office wasnโt working/receiving faxes. I checked in with the producer from the radio series, and we are all good, even though I havenโt finished the episodes yet.
The radio series will be my primary focus while I am in-studio in October, although I also want to try to write one poem each day. I am working on the poems I want to workshop. There are two I know I will bring in, and Iโm trying to figure out a couple more, and then one short scene from the radio series.
I still havenโt figured out what Iโm reading at our event on October 17th. I need to figure that out.
I dug down into the ghostwriting, finished the assignment, and sent it off. I have another 20K assignment due a week from Friday, which I will start today.
Heated up leftovers for dinner. Read the book for review in the evening, which I will write up and send out today.
The doctor finally called to follow-up with my mom. The mass was cancerous, but they got it all, and it wonโt spread. They didnโt sort out the problem with next weekโs appointment, though, so I will try to fax that again today, from my other meeting.
We had our For the People library cohort meeting this evening on ZOOM, and it was so good to see everyone again, and welcome some new people. Itโs such a great group, and it was so good to spend virtual time with everyone. I hadnโt realized how much I missed them.
Slept reasonably well and woke up to cool, foggy temperatures. Itโs supposed to go back up to 80 during the day in the next few days, but the nights should be cool. By the weekend, I might have to turn on the heat and close the door to the front porch at night.
I still have some paperwork to do for todayโs meeting, which I will then walk down to that office. I have a Future Labs ZOOM in the early afternoon about Decemberโs show, and then the afternoon is about the next ghostwriting assignment.
Thatโs the latest! I hope your week is terrific.
