  1. The de-shelled bunya nuts. De-shelling is my least fave part of the process. It's a lot of work for a relatively small quantity of bunya and feels like it takes forever. But hey, at least i didn't cut myself with the knife! Yay!

The pesto making is going to have to wait for another day. #bunya #bunyanuts #food

  6. Boiled the bunya nuts until i saw the ends split a bit (under an hour-ish). The water goes reddy brown.

  7. Now drained and set aside to cool.

Read that you can drink the reddened bunya water too so had a taste (it's not a strong flavour but nice in a brothy kind of way). Though i also read it's a dye. 🤷‍♀️

  18. Finally getting stuck into prepping bunya nuts (was gifted 2 pine cones), hopefully for pesto. Leaving them for a bit helps loosen things up. So easier to break up the cones. .

Please note, i am not a bunya nut expert. Have done this twice before, after YouTubing heaps of advice. So fingers definitely crossed. #bunya #bunyanuts

  23. Visited the day-use area at Ewen Maddock Dam today. Saw a few birds including what appears to be an Eastern Osprey and an Olive-backed Oriole eating a caterpillar. On the way out I spotted a large Bunya nut from one of the nearby Bunya pines (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araucari).

  24. Feral pigs are running wild

"Destruction wrought by pig-borne disease is thining the canopy of bunya pine forests. Australian landscapes didn’t evolve for hard-hoofed animals and aggressive foragers with the mass of a feral pig … we are seeing severe ecological imbalances starting to occur.” >>

  25. Two extremely tall, Bunya bunya pine trees (native to New Caledonia and Australia) are dropping these 20-lb "nut bombs" on the tiny pocket park and sidewalk below them. I, for one, am not going to sit on the bench under these trees. #bunya #Monterey

  26. Walking the trees: we traced how First Nations groups moved bunya pine and black bean trees

Pre-colonial dispersal of Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) and Black Bean trees (Castanospermum australe) by Indigenous Peoples. "Unpicking the deeper past using First Nations lore and genetic analysis is a promising combination to shed light on domestication. Indigenous movement of plants worked to domesticate landscapes. That is, social and cultural preferences of ancestral groups drove ecological transformations which seem, at first glance, to be natural."

  31. Dieback summit looks for solutions as ancient bunya pine 'skeletons' spread beyond national parks

"For thousands of years, Aboriginal nation groups journeyed to Queensland's Bunya Mountains and Blackall Range, gathering large nut-filled cones from pine trees towering up to 50 metres high."

"The bunya pine, Araucaria bidwillii, has survived since the Jurassic period at least 145 million years ago, but soil-borne plant pathogens introduced since European settlement are taking a terrible toll."

  36. Noticed a bunya cone had fallen to the ground. Looked like a bird had a peck. Nuts to be good tucker for people too. Not sure how they're prepared.

  37. It’s bunya nut season, and though it’s not one of the bi-or-triennial bumper seasons like last year was, it is worth checking the ground around your favourite bunya pines for fallen cones. Here’s how I process them, and what the felafel mix looks like before you fry it. witcheskitchen.com.au/bunya-nu #fromthegarden #permaculture #bunya
