  1. What English translations miss about #Bulgakov — and why it matters in #Ukraine

Twentieth-century author Mikhail Bulgakov is celebrated worldwide for his #satirical genius and his defiance of #Soviet power, most famously through works like “The Master and Margarita” and “White Guard.”

In #Ukraine, his legacy is far more complicated.

  3. Tangentially related: how the author of what used to be one of my favourite books, despite an ostensibly oppositional stance, was still a vector of Soviet imperialism:

"Bulgakov grew up speaking Russian and studied medicine at Kyiv University. His upbringing in the city coincided with a period of intense national awakening in Ukraine, but Bulgakov himself expressed disdain for Ukrainian culture and language"

  4. "While Ukraine is busy canceling one of its most famous Kyiv-born writers, Bulgakov, and enthusiastically decorating public spaces with the names of various Nazi collaborators, the rest of the world continues to love and cherish The Master and Margarita🥰"

  7. The satire of the oppressive Soviet life was excellent in the Russian classic The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. But I did not find the Biblical and Margarita fantasy parts of the book to be interesting.

"Il Maestro e Margherita" di Michail Bulgakov, pp.552, Feltrinelli, ed.2014.

Anni fa non ero riuscito a terminarlo perchè io e i nomi russi non andiamo d'accordo.
Mi sono messo d'impegno, segnandomi i nomi e aggiungendo delle note, e ho scoperto poi una lettura scorrevole e un mondo magico e profondo che giustifica la fama di questo libro.

  9. Relived my adolescence this week by buying old X-men comics. Something I thought I was long over… anyway, how crazy is this little throwaway scene where a character’s homework comes to life and she finds herself in a Bulgakov novel? #xmen #comicbooks #bulgakov #russianliterature

  17. In the grocery store ran into an ex-colleague from the previous work. Or, rather, she ran into me, and it took me some time to remember who this person was.

She was behaving all friendly and nice, smiling, asking about my life and all. And I couldn't help but remember how I used to spend lunch breaks hiding in the bathroom, crying. How they mocked me for my love for classical music. How once I feared physical violence after I quoted #Bulgakov.

And now she behaves as if nothing ever happened.
