  1. CW: Budget

One really disappointing thing about the budget was I didn't hear anything about closing loopholes on inheritance tax.

We're told that inheritance tax doesn't raise much money, which is of course true. But that's only because the people who have squillions to inherit can mostly avoid it by exploiting loopholes.

Close all the loopholes, I suspect it would raise a lot more. That's where I would have started.

  2. Jeremy Hunt; Rwanda, the answer to savings to fund tax cuts

Desperate to come up with tax cuts to salvage Tory economic credibility Jeremy Hunt needs to make spending cuts. With money being ‘wasted’ on things like prisons, benefits, health and education there is a lot of scope to save money. Rwanda is the key.

No more money wasted on pensioners, unemployed and prisoners.

  3. A Prime Ministerial Scheme To Stop Poverty Due to Health Crises Is Helping Poorest Indians The Least

Launched in 2018, the Prime Minister’s health insurance programme was meant to prevent ‘catastrophic’ health expenditure that pushed 60 million Indians into poverty each year. In September 2022, the government claimed it had ‘saved crores of families’ from such expenditure, but there are no data to support this claim, and studies indicate India’s most marginalised people are not benefitting, while insurance companies are.

  4. Does the “free prescription medicine for all” work hard enough as the universal goodie in an election year?

I don’t think so. Sure its helpful but its not enough. #budget2023

  6. “Ignoring the housing crisis will result in the Brazilianization of Australia, changing us into a country of high inequality and exclusion in our lifetime. This represents a dark future in which Australia’s long-held myth of a classless society will be shattered.”

NEW BLOG POST: “Digital developments from Canberra 35: Budget Special” stilgherrian.com/essay/digital #Budget2023

I’ve gone though the Budget to find things related to the digital and cyber realms, plus a few other items that caught my eye. This is a loooooong post!

  9. Hey Albo, poor people being able to feed themselves & have a roof over a head doesn't cause inflation. The rich cause inflation. #Budget2023 #Budget #auspol

  10. CW: Budget 2023

Looking at sone of the news stories this morning, I can see that I missed a few big-ticket items that were “hidden” as part of other programs. So I’ll be adding to this thread through the morning. #Budget2023

  11. CW: Budget 2023

ICYMI, I did this thread last night about the cyberish and digitalish things in the Budget. #Budget2023

The Twitter version is identical and I put that on a single page at threadreaderapp.com/thread/165.

It’ll turn into a blog post later this morning.

  12. Despairing of the economic innumeracy of our press, describing $21 billion over five years as a "cash splash" etc.
    Putting it in perspective
< $4 per Australian per week
    < 0.2 % of GDP
< one-year's worth of Stage 3 cuts, which will go on indefinitely #auspol #Budget2023

  13. Tonight Australian Federal Budget 2023 was handed down. I went through the Budget papers to see what payment measures for climate and sustainability were there.

Good news: Looks like Australia is getting a National Climate Risk assessment and National Adaptation Plan.

  14. ARC #Budget2023

I don’t *think* the ARC got a funding boost in the Budget 😒

(Though I'm confused about it – see next 2 tweets👇)

The case for no Budget boost is from the Edu Dept’s “portfolio statement” ⤵️

    Fairly definitive…I guess?

  15. There are some very nice small measures in #Budget2023 but I guess we need to wait for #Budget2026 after the next election win when the ALP really feels brave enough.

  16. Youth Allowance will go up by $40 a fortnight, can you believe it?

This is an inflationary increase that will just force me to increase the rent on the students I provide housing to.
