The provinces that have implemented #American #booze bans have their critics here in #Canada, but you can't deny that it has given us a bargaining chip we didn't have before.

But, for #America and the world, the episode also holds three important lessons about Donald Trump’s tariffs. And the president’s latest threat, issued on Monday, to hit #Canada with tariffs of 50 per cent on a wide range of #goods raises the stakes and shows how important it is for Canada to hold the line.
The first lesson is that retaliation works.

Where #China, for instance, has spent years carefully building geopolitical leverage through control of critical supply chains, Canada’s booze #boycott has been powered mostly by consumer choice and the decision of the provincially owned liquor companies of #Ontario and #Quebec not to buy US alcohol. And it turns out that rum and rosé can pack almost as much of a trade war punch as rare earths. US alcohol exports to Canada fell 70 per cent from 2024 to 2025, a $536mn loss for the US industry.”

Love seeing Virginia, whose laws until just a handful of years ago were some of the most draconian in the country outside of some deep red states, continue to loosen up their alcohol laws.

The newest big change is that for mixed drink licenses no longer is 45% of your sales required to be food. Now just 30% of them is, which is huge for small restaurants who tend to do more business from the bar than the table. I've been arguing for years our laws have been hilariously misguided on food sales in alcoholic establishments.

One of my absolute favourite records.
‘Delta Bound’ in particular – a tribute to the Deep South – is magical. It was with this song that I first realised there are other instruments besides the guitar, such as the clarinet. Rosetta’s songs are about loose women and bad boys, about drugs and alcohol abuse. Classic everyday themes, in other words. If the crackling bothers you, you can always listen to AI music.
