  1. The last of Alan Birch is finally split and stacked.

This was a tough birch. I thought I lost my mojo but some ancient oak and fresh maple logs did split just fine so it was just that this birch was really tough. Probably because it didn't grow in a forest but on its own on a windy hill. Sadly it rotted inside as forked trunks often do.

As you can see I resorted to the chainsaw for some of the knottier pieces, the rest with wedge and axe.

  6. “Get Out of My Stove” by Thomas Typewriter – a new poem

Neighbors, kindly and good Get out of my stove I will not with your birchwood I will not with your soup bones That which once moved  breathes long rattle thin tones I will not with your oakwood I will not with your ash or thorn Of this world I’ve had my fill And all the others too Where be the silence and stone Crumbled from gilded thrones  Now get out of my stove -Thomas Typewriter If you like this, or any of my other art, please consider throwing some support my way […]

  7. Brilliant bunch of birch. They're one of my favourite trees as they're one of the few I can recognize. It is in Quebec or New Brunswick.

Also I shot this from the VIA Rail Ocean service between Montreal and Halifax. We must've stopped for a bit, and got lucky with a clean window

  8. Rows of lavender fan uphill toward a warm band of amber. You can only see it in France in July!

This is "Uphill Fields" by Janet Dyer. Check out the layers of color!

Janet’s piece is a sunlit, lively moment in the Boese Galleries collection.

  13. Here's Janet Dyer's "A Path Through Snow" for a quick cool-down!

Late-winter light folds cool blues into small ochres and birch trunks set a steady rhythm. I notice a sunlit patch of chartreuse that pulls the eye inward like a small promise of thaw.

The scene balances the stillness of snow with a warming burst of light, tactile and measured.

  22. It remains a mystery why many of the birch trees here have red-brown bark? I suppose it is because of the high iron content - everything here is in red sand and the water leaves a brown sediment.

  26. This birch was cut down when it broke after the storm. There is a pinkish foam on the cut site now, and I think it is still flowing birch sap!
