Billund Airport, Denmark’s second largest airport, started off as a private air strip for the neighbouring Lego company.
It started in 1961 as private 800 metre grass runway next to the factory for its executives.
By 1964 it was converted to a 1600 metre paved runway.

#Billund area tourism tip: the little trainstation at #Bindeballe is renovated and is now a free mini-museum.
I'm especially impressed by the photo of a man with a glorious belly that can make a bellcurve jealous. Very Obelix.

Participated in last weekend's #BRM600 #brevet organized by #Audax #Randonneurs #Allemagne (ARA), Schleswig-Holstein. Weather was OK, and we rode northwards from #Kiel via #Eckernförde and #Flensburg, before entering #Denmark 🇩🇰. We finally reached #Legoland at #Billund from where we started our journey back via #Ølgod, #Esbjerg, #Husum ... eventually back to Kiel. Despite some technical issues I enjoyed the ride and the camaraderie with fellow #bicyclists. Thanks everybody 🙏.

An illustrated example: when infrastructure cohesion is not considered a top-down priority.
This is the border between the communities of #Billund and #Vejle. They agreed to connect with cycling infrastructure so the dangerous road could be skipped.
Billund constructed tarmac. Vejle a now submerged gravel trail.
Unfortunately on maps both are labeled the same. Which leads f.e. to families on cycling holidays (to Legoland..) ending up on the busy road.

Just bought the plane ticket from #Krakow to #Billund. Now I just have to piece the rest of the #Kyiv return trip together. Ukrainan train booking open in a couple of days. Throw in a little #Flixbus and we should be there.
