    The word is Water

William Orbit, “Water From A Vine Leaf” from Strange Cargo III, 1993

I think I first encountered #WilliamOrbit via a mix on a 12” single of #Sting’s “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.” Spare and clean with minimal instrumentation and just a touch of electronics, it hinted at #funk enough to make this white girl move, but not muss my hair. It had what I came to recognize as his mixing hallmark: the electronics were there to serve the song. Mixes for singles by #Madonna (Justify My Love), #PeterGabriel (Mercy Street) and #Seal (Crazy) followed, all among my favorites.

What I didn’t know was at the same time, he was creating music of his own and had an ongoing project, Strange Cargo - but when Water from a Vine Leaf hit the airwaves, I became AWARE. This track bathes the listener in ethereal beauty, complete with icy cool vocals from early muse #BethOrton, while it absolutely SLAMS.

    The word is Lonely

#BethOrton, “Lonely” from Weather Alive, 2022

I fell in love with Beth Orton’s voice and her aesthetic with the first plaintive notes of “She Cries Your Name” from her major-label debut “Trailer Park” in 1995. There is a cool #downtempo texture that just drips from her vocals, whether used to add organic appeal in a techno tableau (paging #WilliamOrbit), or to chill the vibe of #AcousticFolk. She has penned and sung transcendent music that simultaneously opens and soothes my heart, and less ambitious songs that are still delicate and lovely, had highs and lows over the years, but she hasn’t moved me in the way she used to in some time. With “Lonely” on her latest album “Weather Alive,” her voice does sound weathered - pun intended, on both our parts? - but the magic is back.
