Episode 4 of 5Award-winning writer Rebecca Stott likes to unearth the overlooked and the forgotten.
While taking a long walk in Sussex to mark the first anniversary of her mother’s death, Rebecca’s focus shifts to the mud all around her. Noticing it for the first time in detail, she sets off on a journey to discover its hidden depths and meanings. She finds herself peeling back layers of literature, culture, science and geology; she discovers the rich literary history of marsh monsters, dips her toes into Darwin’s mud experiments, treads in the footsteps of soldiers in the trenches during World War One and finds out how mud cores extracted from the seabed can shed light on the planet’s past and future.
In Episode 4, Rebecca traces her own tragic family history: two newly discovered letters reveal that two of her family members lost their lives on mud-drenched battlefields, one in Mesopotamia and the other in France.

I just started this article by Patricia Crone about 9th Century Muslim anarchists from Basra. I haven't even got to the Muslims yet and already learned something new! Of course once I read that it's not obvious that human society can exist without government I can see that it's not, which means it had to occur to someone at some point. Apparently in the Western philosophical tradition The stoics were among the first to see this.

Of course once I read that it's not obvious that human society can exist without government I can see that it's not, which means it had to occur to someone at some point. Iran and Iraq just signed an agreement to build a railroad between Shalamche and Basra, for the price of 215 billion Iraqi dinar!
During the 8 years of Iraq-Iran war, 10s of thousands of Iranians died on the island when trying to "liberate" Basra. The island has been closed to public because it is filled with landmines left over since the end of 1980-88 war.
The contact is for an Iranian company to build a bridge as well as railroads connecting the island to the port city of Basra and then connect it to the Iranian railroad in Khorramshahr.
