  3. If you ever think you're slow and that it takes you (or your team) too much time to implement something, remember that #Basecamp launched 22 years ago and started supporting #MarkDown with version 5, released this week.

  8. 🌳 Recursive entries via parent_id — enabling nested hierarchies like threaded comments, email topics with messages & private notes
📝 Immutability: create new versions instead of updating — Entry is a pointer to current state with full edit history

    🛠️ Battle-tested at #37signals in #Basecamp, #HEY & #Writebook — combined with STI & polymorphic relations for max flexibility
📊 Relational DB as graph: thin models, rich hierarchies & full history — no Event Sourcing needed

  11. Any experience (good or bad) on using #Basecamp for managing software projects?

  13. Whether you like DHH (David Heinemeier Hansson) or not, he has gone full Nazi.

If you don't believe it, just read his latest blog post (in which he reminisces about a London that didn't have today's number of immigrants and is hardly white anymore—ironic to read that from a Dane who immigrated to the USA, but he's white, of course—and sympathizes with the British neo-nazi scene, even glorifies the British nazis and some asshole who literally called for punching trans women "in the balls" if they enter the ladies' bathroom, but disagrees with the saying "punch a nazi" as he laments that words all too quickly become actions).

Or his blog post from one day before, where he downplayed and defended Charlie Kirk who thought that black people are inferior to white people, among many other vile disgusting things, and whose vocation literally was to go on college campuses and indoctrinate young people with hate.

    Or …

I hope you see the pattern.

I cannot stress enough how ridiculously limited #Basecamp is...

  19. Hey #fedihelp #gis nerds, which macos software should i checkout for route planing for a multiday hiking trip in .de, i do have gpx tracks but want to combine them, edit the, etc. pp. is #garmin #basecamp still valid / used or any web tools? i am aware of #komoot / #outdooractive, but maybe someone has something "better"? Elevation data / #openstreetmap is a must-have.

  20. The new issue tracking app from 37 Signales looks interesting. It mirrors their keep it simple philosophy thats used (and I like!) in Basecamp and HEY email.

  21. In my further preparations of a tour in September, I stumbled upon a website about a "basecamp" on the Panixerpass. The hut is small and reservations can't be made, which means that quite a few people camp out there. Apparently that lead to some frustration and a "basecamp" was attempted. You could make reservations for a tent and there was a big dome tent which served as a community room.

In 2024 this was an attempt, but it has been decided to NOT open for summer 2025. Reason being given is to protect the sensitive nature at the pass.

  22. I've been using an #hey.com email account for the last few years. However, I think it's time to stop paying for something run by DHH.

Any suggestions for a good, preferably European email service? Currently, I'm thinking about #ProtonMail.

Furthermore, I need a replacement for #Basecamp, which I used to manage the bachelor thesis projects of my students. Any suggestions for a good alternative?

  23. Basecamp Free includes 1 project, 1 GB of storage and 20 people (including employees, collaborators, & clients).

  24. Basecamp now has a free option that supports a single project. Ideal for anyone looking for a good way to manage tasks, files, etc.

I pay for the Plus tier as I need to have clients as guests. I only pay for my account. Guests are free.

  25. Crystalizing experiences

It’s important to be aware of our own crystallizing experiences and how they affected us. I’m curious about what crystalizing experiences you’ve had, and I’m thinking beyond just moments, to books, people, videos, discussions, whatever left an impact. What stuck with you and changed the way you thought about things? This could be in any area of your life: work, learning, movement, writing, any hobby. What was the experience, and how did it change your practice?

    ~ Melissa Way

The Movers Mindset team has an internal project management system. (Basecamp.com in case you’re still mysteriously using something dysfunctional, like Slack, to run your team.) Each week, in a sort of loose rotation, we take turns kicking off some discussion by posting something—anything, whatever interests us when it’s our turn.

I’ve been coming back to this post from Melissa for nearly two weeks, trying to figure out where to start on a reply. Each time I start thinking, my mind wanders down a seemingly endless sequence of formative experiences; I can’t even begin to list them as they’d sound like an intolerable bragging-list. There are some unbelievable experiences ranging from, “been there,” to “done that,” and careening between, “literally cheated death,” and “hfsyesagainplease.”

Instead of trying to pick just one, tell the story, and pull out how the experience changed me, I’m going to ask, and attempt to answer, a meta question: Is life a journey of becoming, or simply a journey?

If it’s the former, then I should be paying attention for—perhaps even actively seeking—crystallizing experiences my entire life. I should be continuously repeating the process of asking myself what I should change or improve next, and then seeking out the experiences or knowledge to achieve that change. But having bashed myself on that cold anvil, incessantly seeking change and improvement, I’m now convinced that it’s the later.

    Life is simply a journey.
