Et si… Un roman d’anticipation commence comme un conte de fée maléfique où le Démon, le Destin le Hasard, bouleverse l’ordre du monde et la routine établie pour faire surgir la Catastrophe. En 2013, le météore de Tcheliabinsk, en Russie a ravagé 80 km de forêt en Sibérie. Mais si c’était pire ? L’auteur s’est appuyé sur la mission Hera menée par l’ESA et la mission DART de la NASA pour formuler une hypothèse : un croiseur stellaire plus gros, près de deux kilomètres, presque sphérique et d’un seul bloc, de la roche et beaucoup de fer. Selon les estimations, il y aurait 5000 astéroïdes dangereux pour notre planète qui tournent autour depuis des millions d’années et nous n’en avons repéré que 20 %. Alors, pourquoi pas ?
L’astéroïde du roman n’a pas été repéré par les astronomes, peut-être parce qu’il a été dévié par un autre, et il approche désormais à plus de 25 km par seconde. Il devrait toucher les trois-quarts de l’Europe dans dix jours. C’est la panique. « Au sol, ce sera un cratère de cinquante kilomètres environ, peut-être plus. Et l’onde de choc va brûler et balayer les trois-quarts du vieux continent. Je vous confirme que plus de cinq cents millions d’êtres humains sont concernés à court terme. » Il faut évacuer tout ce monde, trouver des pays d’accueil, vite submergés par la vague migratoire et réticents, trouver des transports, réguler le flux.
Le président de la première puissance du monde, les USA, qui risque de perdre des millions de consommateurs riches en Europe, s’en fout. L’auteur lui croque un portrait de bouffon égoïste et bonimenteur : « ce gros homme politique fait son cinéma de président en temps de crise, mais qu’il est soulagé, plus pressé de fanfaronner une fois de plus en conférence de presse que de chercher des solutions pour limiter les dégâts dans le reste du monde. » Une aubaine pour faire du fric : il faut désormais justifier d’un patrimoine d’au moins un million de dollars par famille pour obtenir une Carte Gold de résident et espérer connaître le rêve américain. Mieux, le Trompe (car c’est de lui qu’il s’agit) songe à un nouveau partage du monde entre puissances restantes : « On parle d’un triplement de la capacité des camps de réfugiés en Russie et en Chine dans le cadre d’un accord secret pour le partage d’influence sur la « nouvelle Europe ». Un nouveau Yalta sans guerre, songe David. Le partage d’un continent en ruine sans la moindre intervention humaine. »
Pour émigrer, légalement ou non, il faut voyager léger. Et si possible anticiper : être capable de tout quitter en 24 h sans remord. Son passeport à jour est primordial, sur soi et pas au fond du sac fourre-tout ; un téléphone mobile chargé – et son chargeur ; ses documents (livret de famille, certificat de mariage, carnet de santé…), photos, souvenirs, sur le cloud ; ses médicaments chroniques ; un habillement pratique, lavable, et des chaussures de marche légères (pas des hauts talons, ni des bottes à la mode dans les séries télé) ; la conversion en cryptomonnaie de son patrimoine bancaire évite les confiscations gouvernementales et les défaillances d’établissements ou de systèmes informatiques, mais ne résout pas tout ; de l’argent liquide, mais pas trop pour ne pas se faire voler – et une partie en dollars américains, monnaie internationale ; un seul bagage, si possible sac à dos chacun (y compris les enfants) plutôt que valise, avec une bouteille d’eau et de la nourriture pour deux jours chacun ; des affaires de toilette minimum avec un pain de savon plus qu’un flacon de shampoing liquide, qui peut se répandre et dure moins ; un vêtement de pluie style K-way et une fourrure polaire même s’il fait 30° dehors, on ne peut tout prévoir. En bref, envisager le voyage comme le font les migrants, et pas comme des touristes. Même les vols « réservés peuvent ne pas partir du tout.
Les citoyens, jusqu’alors bons pères de famille et bons époux, sans histoire avec leurs voisins et collègues, transgressent toutes les règles de la vie en société. Chacun pour soi et on sort les fusils. La racaille s’en donne à cœur joie : permis de menacer, de piller et de jouir sans entraves policières. « La peur paralyse et crée le danger, exacerbe les haines aveugles, empêche de travailler ceux qui gardent leur calme. La peur crée des sur-accidents, monte les uns contre les autres. » Il y a des pilleurs qui en profitent, des jaloux qui veulent empêcher les autres de prendre l’avion ou le bateau et n’hésitent pas pour cela à les détruire, des complotistes qui n’y croient pas et se vengent de ceux qui suivent les consignes officielles, des nationalistes régionaux qui défendent « leur » territoire contre les étrangers venus des régions voisines…
L’auteur distille savamment les histoires entrecoupées de divers personnages qui tentent de fuir la catastrophe tout en conservant leur morale. Il décrit une Nouvelle France à la Mélenchon, très mêlée et métissée. Nous pouvons suivre Luis, le footeux prometteur juif de Tours et son copain homo Élie ; Lucie la Guadeloupéenne et son fils autiste Tom, son mari conservateur à Orsay ayant été descendu par des braqueurs ; Ayan le pirate somalien qui veut retrouver sa sœur Imani, forcée d’émigrer en France quand elle était petite, et qui sauve la Sénégalaise Sita et son bébé sur les instances d’un vieil homme pieux ; David le taulard, qui s’est découvert le demi-frère de l’Américain Warren, grand ponte de la NASA, qui est venu en France pour emmener la grand-mère Gittelman échappée d’Auschwitz – laquelle, à 94 ans, est résolue à rester dans son Ehpad de luxe à la frontière suisse ; Bilal le Tunisien pizzaiolo divorcé après 5 ans de taule pour fraude, qui veut fuir au-delà de la Méditerranée avec sa fille Inès.
Tous vont vivre l’Exode de leur résidence vers un aéroport ou un port d’embarquement pour le continent américain ou africain. Nos personnages vont se retrouver pour 100 000 $ chacun en cryptomonnaies (bien pratique quand les banques sont soufflées) sur un voilier de 40 m venant de Jersey, les recueillant sur une plage proche de Saint-Malo pour leur faire traverser l’Atlantique. Évidemment, ceux qui peuvent payer ne sont pas les plus vertueux, un antiquaire belge aux divers passeports, un chef de gang et sa pétasse idiote avec son garde du corps demeuré, un taulard évadé dans la panique qui s’enfile de la coca in the baba, un chirurgien esthétique menacé de procès et sa femme botoxée, un couple de bobos avec deux petits garçons mal, sinon pas élevés.
Les bandits vont évidemment s’emparer du voilier, passant par-dessus bord le gros bourré de diamants et abandonnant trois marins les chercher en plein Atlantique, au large du Sénégal. Les méchants seront-ils tous punis et les bons seront-ils tous sauvés ? A l’aide de ces derniers, des dauphins, un chien, le pirate repenti Ayan et leur astuce. Notamment celle de Tom.
C’est un roman spectaculaire, haletant, aux caractères bien sentis. Il brosse le scénario d’une catastrophe où toute civilisation disparaît pour laisser place à la barbarie, laissant quelques îlots de bonté et de morale dans le chaos. Mais si peu…
