It's been a while since my last post and a lot has happened. Hence, a quick update.

I've fully migrated from #freeipa to #kanidm by now and while this path was definitely not without (also major) problems, a lot of back and forth also with the developers, and a steep learning curve on my side, overall I don't regret the decision at all.

While kanidm arguably falls behind in popularity/visibility compared to #authentik, #keycloak, etc and seemingly also has (much?) less developers, and development therefore feels slower, it scores with simplicity and by offering exactly what I need. And it is MUCH more light-weight than #freeipa and has WAY fewer moving parts. And developers react quickly and are helpful. POSIX users/groups I could just "inherit" from the existing system.

I have around 10 services connected to it using OIDC, SSH access to servers, and automatic SSH key provisioning. All is working fine (finally now).

What is a bit annoying about OIDC is that not all services offer OIDC out of the box, i.e. sometimes additional plugins are needed. The other annoying thing is that OIDC implementations differ, e.g. in how group mapping are used (if at all). But this is not kanidm's fault.

If you are looking for a one-stop solution that offers OIDC, SSH key provisioning and replication - don't look any further. I can most highly recommend it.

Spent four hours trying to install Authentik. First I ran into https://github.com/goauthentik/authentik/issues/8127
Then I ran into an issue in portainer:
If a Stack (docker compose file) defines an `environment:` for a container, the also defined environment variables do NOT get populated into the container. This then broke Authentik's email configuration.

@Codebender_Cate Take it one step at a time. For me it was starting with pictures. I installed Immich and moved my family off of Google/Apple for image sync. Then files was next for me, so I selected NextCloud. Then see what you have left going to big tech, rinse and repeat.

Also, I highly recommend an AI programming assistant like Claude Code or OpenAI Codex. It can greatly improve your IT abilities! In the last few months I have setup #Immich, #NextCloud, #Netbird, #UptimeKuma, #ForgeJo, #Authentik, #Pihole, #Beszel, #ActualBudget, #OpenWebUI, #Nfty, and #Tautulli.

By the way, I set up an Authentik instance just so I could use Tailscale with my own OpenID Connect provider, because I didn't feel like dealing with a Google account, Microsoft account, or anything like that xD

An und für sich bin ich ja zufrieden mit Authentik und ich habe auch wirklich keine Lust meine 10 OAuth-Apps woanders hin zu migrieren, falls es dazu kommen sollte, _aber_ ich verstehe einfach nicht, warum das einloggen einfach 1-2 Sekunden braucht. Warum muss ich da zwei Sekunden lang diesen Spinner sehen. Ich bin der einzige User, das Tool läuft auf einer VM, auf der sonst nichts passiert. Was genau macht der so lange.
