  4. Liquidated my Astra (#ASTR) position. Took a 99% loss on that one since the SPAC offering and the latest news is basically that of a clown car.

Haven't put much into it since the SPAC era, and the remaining horse that I'm riding is #RKLB since #VORB went out of business earlier this year.

Still bullish on the space sector and still believe will lead to some great returns in the future, but it's clear that there's a lot of churning in the years ahead.

  7. "The string of chronic issues bred frustration, ultimately leading to all but two of Apollo Fusion engineers and staff leaving the company, LinkedIn data and interviews with multiple sources show."

Oof. Glad I didn't sink any money into Astra after announcing their shift to satellite engines. Dead company walking!

  10. Solid interview with Chris Kemp of Astra. After reading Vance's "When the Heavens Went on Sale", I read this as Kemp doing what he does best - not building rockets, but peddling Hopium. (Disclosure, I'm [still] an ASTR shareholder/bagholder who lost a LOT of money on the company to date.)

While I'm VERY skeptical that the satellite engine business will keep the enterprise afloat, this was an interesting look into the man's psychology.

  13. Required reading for anyone following the New Space economy. This will become a definitive historical text should mankind actually escape the Earth's gravity well and establish a meaningful presence "out there".

  14. #ASTRA is looking to raise $65 million to keep the doors open.

Assuming a constant burn rate that will give them enough money to keep going until Q1 2024.

By then Rocket 4.0 hopefully would've launched and the Astra Space engine would be generating non-negligible amounts of revenue.

In their latest annual report they mentioned that they had 278 engines in backlog, at 250k per engine, that is almost $70M in revenue or close to 30-$35M in earnings.

  16. I forgot to comment on this earlier, but I hope it's a precursor to an eventual state where Rocket Lab has acquired Astra's Hall Effect thrusters and added it to their Space Systems portfolio. It makes a lot more sense there than it does with Astra at the moment.

We'll have to see if Astra gets its act together with Rocket 4 or whether the Astra Spacecraft Engine becomes something else Rocket Lab picks up in a firesale.

  18. @laimis And there's a part of me rooting for Astra to finally bite it, and for Peter Beck to pick up the Hall Effect engine Astra is selling (picked up from the Apollo Fusion acquisition) and making it part of Rocket Lab's Space Services portfolio.

It's not an engine powerful enough to lift anything out of Earth's gravity well, but IS being used on satellites already in orbit to navigate and maintain position.

  20. @laimis It's good to see one of my launcher bets paying off.* :-)

I invested in Astra and Virgin Orbit and both of those have been pretty much complete losses, though Astra protests otherwise and that they'll get that share price back up with the un-flown Rocket 4.

    * Since I got in early in the SPAC days, I'm still underwater on RKLB, but that's not a problem, as I have full faith in the company and expect it to surge once the market calms down a bit.

  23. Honestly surprised that #VORB got to this point sooner than #ASTR. It looks like that botched UK launch might have been the final nail in the coffin.

Fortunately, I only had a token position in this company (enough to keep me interested enough to keep paying attention), so it's nowhere the money loser for me that Astra has been.

Meanwhile, satellite operators say they want more and better options to put hardware on orbit."
