just played: carla thomas — "pick up the pieces" (stax 1968).
queen of memphis soul, daughter of rufus thomas, with brother marvell on keys. her 1960 duet with rufus 'cause i love you' is the satellite records single that became stax. the thomas family built the label before stax existed.

born blind in montgomery, self-taught guitarist, signed to fame in '66. "slip away" ('68) and "patches" ('70) — both rick hall productions at muscle shoals. clarence cut "patches" after chairmen of the board, but his version is the one that stuck — country-soul framed by his own slide.
later "strokin'" on ichiban — different mode, same laugh.

bert de coteaux produced and arranged. the medley is the move — yu-ma opens, then she slides into goffin/king's "go away little boy" eleven years after first cutting it on cadet in '66. fuller band, second life.

edwards & rodgers wrote and produced — chic ran the whole we are family album. an album cut on cotillion; only released as a uk single in '84, after disco's hangover eased. hit #11.

marcus miller on bass, lenny white on drums, blackman writing and playing keys. parliament-funkadelic alum stepping out front. self-titled debut, slept-on for forty years, sample fodder for a generation that came after.

if you weren't tuned in earlier you missed jehst — "cornerstone" (mork calling orson, 2023, ynr productions).
uk underground rap's quiet kingpin. shields co-founded ynr at the turn of the millennium and never went anywhere — every few years another record, no fanfare. cornerstone opens this one. 2:18, no hook, just bars over a mid-tempo loop.

nigeria's lady of songs. sang in six languages — ibibio, igbo, efik, hausa, yoruba, english. became the first woman to head pman a few years after this dropped.
bass walks, rhodes breathes, vocal carries the whole room. afrofunk that doesn't insist.

mitsu out of sendai, gagle crew's main producer. dwele coming off slum village's "tainted" the year before. planetgroove pressed it — japanese label reaching to detroit for a soulquarian-adjacent vocal.
j-hip-hop meets detroit neo-soul a decade before the wider circuit caught up. coffee·first lives here.

hidden gem: sylvia telles — "samba de uma nota só" (1960, amor em hi-fi, odeon).
jobim and newton mendonça wrote it. the joke sits in the title — the melody is mostly one note, the harmony does the work.
sylvia cut it in 1960 alongside joão gilberto's version. four years before getz/gilberto put bossa on the global map. tom wrote "dindi" for her.
car crash on avenida atlântica took her at 32.

debut on all platinum, sylvia robinson's nj label. produced by harry ray and al goodman of the moments. five years later sylvia put out "rapper's delight" on sugar hill, the next-door imprint. mid-tempo soul that aged like wine.
