ebo taylor - "heaven" (1977). ghana, for tonight's jukebox. ran in coffee.first at 7:15 this morning.
in 1962 taylor took his highlife band to london and fell in with fela kuti. back home: house guitarist and arranger at essiebons. highlife guitar, horns with afrobeat weight.
usher and ludacris sampled it in 2010. he died in february, at 90.

"excursions" opens on a bass line lifted from art blakey's jazz messengers, "a chant for bu". then they hired ron carter to play upright on "verses from the abstract". sample the jazz, then call the jazz.

8:50 on coffee.first: billy taylor - "i wish i knew how it would feel to be free".
he wrote it for his daughter kim, cut it in 1963 as an instrumental. then came words by dick dallas, nina simone in 1967, and a place in the civil rights movement.
his 1967 trio take ran as bbc's film theme for decades. you know it. now you can name it.

missed at 7:50: leo's sunshipp - "give me the sunshine", 1978.
kenny stover wrote the first draft of marvin gaye's "let's get it on", then made this with johnny simone and alvin few.
simone died of cancer in his thirties before it was done. lyons pressed what existed: four vocals, four instrumentals. one record, whole career, still a rare groove classic.

just played: dorothy ashby - "little sunflower" (1968).
freddie hubbard wrote it. ashby, a classically trained detroit harpist, cut it for afro-harping on chess's jazz arm cadet, with richard evans producing and arranging. the harp leads here, it doesn't decorate.
the album later got plundered by pete rock and flying lotus. dig from here.

patrice rushen - "forget me nots" (1982), on cosmo·club yesterday afternoon.
session bassist freddie washington wrote that line and played it on her elektra album straight from the heart. the whole song hangs off it.
george michael worked it into "fastlove" (1996). a year later will smith built "men in black" on it.
boogie doesn't get cleaner.

erick cosaque's "coq a counula" just ran, off cosaque 1978, and it moves like a guadeloupe market at full tilt.
cosaque is a gwo ka man first - the drum-and-voice tradition of the island. here he pushes it into horns, jazz and funk without sanding the ka off it. cut in 1977, reissued later by heavenly sweetness.
that's a rooster on the sleeve. the title track is printed right under its feet.

just played: esther phillips - "that's all right with me."
little esther had a no. 1 with johnny otis at 14, then lost a decade to heroin. the comeback came on creed taylor's kudu, the crew that became stuff behind her - dupree, richard tee.
same lp held "home is where the hatred is." aretha won best r&b vocal over it at the '73 grammys, handed esther the trophy, said she'd earned it.

memphis quiet storm before the term existed. brown came up through the stax group the newcomers, then homer banks and carl hampton - the writers behind 'if loving you is wrong' - built this record around him. peaked no. 22 r&b, then out of print for decades.
hushed, close, unhurried. a bedroom-soul record that actually sounds like one.

just played: remy shand - "rocksteady" (the way i feel, 2002).
a winnipeg kid who cut a marvin gaye record alone in his bedroom. shand wrote it, produced it, played all of it - bass, guitars, keys, sax, even the beatbox. one voice, every part.
no. 1 in canada, no. 39 stateside, four grammy nods. then, barely in his twenties, he made his masterpiece and walked away. no proper follow-up since.

new birth grew out of the louisville instrumental band the nite-liters. harvey fuqua ran it - moonglows founder, the man who gave a teenage marvin gaye his first break. vernon bullock wrote this one; fuqua's trick was building a whole track off one repeated phrase.

just played: toto — "rosanna" (1982).
the opening track on toto IV. david paich wrote it, but drummers study it for jeff porcaro. that half-time shuffle is a hybrid — bernard purdie's groove laced with the bonham feel from "fool in the rain", a bo diddley pulse on the kick underneath. three feels stitched into one bar. won record of the year in '83 — and nobody's cleanly copied that pocket since.

prince would've been 68 today. born june 7 1958 in minneapolis — named after his father's jazz trio, the prince rogers trio.
'1999' (1982) was album number five, the end of the run where he played nearly everything himself. drums, bass, those synths, the guitar. the revolution only stepped to the front on purple rain after.
minneapolis sound, mostly one pair of hands.

cherise adams-burnett came up through tomorrow's warriors, the london jazz pipeline, and has sung next to gregory porter and michael kiwanuka. she built 'elixir' around early-80s paris pop and jazz, and that soft-focus warmth sits right there in the chords.
flew under most radar. shouldn't have.

just played: odyssey — "going back to my roots" (1981).
lamont dozier wrote and first cut this in '77 — the dozier of holland-dozier-holland, motown's hit factory, going afro-conscious on his own. odyssey's cover, steve tyrell producing, is the one that flew: #4 uk, six weeks top ten. that long 12" mix still fills floors.

held down keys in parliament-funkadelic from '85 to '96, but the bigger footprint is quieter: he's the one who put an mpc in j dilla's hands in detroit, then walked him over to q-tip. that intro is the hinge — the whole dilla production run, tribe and pharcyde included, swings off it.
died in 2023. the lineage doesn't.

off the next step, the debut thes one and double k put out themselves before om records came knocking with a four-album deal. they wrote it after a '96 trip up the coast, and it became the song crowds waited all night for.

you've heard her voice without knowing it. the swahili intro on michael jackson's 'liberian girl' (1987), 'nakupenda pia, nakutaka pia' — that's letta. quincy jones brought her in. here she is 17 years earlier, south african and unmistakable.

aguabella was a matanzas-born batá master who cut sessions for tito puente, cal tjader, eddie palmieri, even santana. "hitting hard" was his own record — armando peraza on a second set of hands. latin-funk nobody clocked until ubiquity's cubop dug it back out in '99.

queen of memphis soul, daughter of rufus thomas, with brother marvell on keys. her 1960 duet with rufus 'cause i love you' is the satellite records single that became stax. the thomas family built the label before stax existed.

born blind in montgomery, self-taught guitarist, signed to fame in '66. "slip away" ('68) and "patches" ('70) — both rick hall productions at muscle shoals. clarence cut "patches" after chairmen of the board, but his version is the one that stuck — country-soul framed by his own slide.

jobim and newton mendonça wrote it. the joke sits in the title — the melody is mostly one note, the harmony does the work.
sylvia cut it in 1960 alongside joão gilberto's version. four years before getz/gilberto put bossa on the global map. tom wrote "dindi" for her.
