    queen of memphis soul, daughter of rufus thomas, with brother marvell on keys. her 1960 duet with rufus 'cause i love you' is the satellite records single that became stax. the thomas family built the label before stax existed.

    born blind in montgomery, self-taught guitarist, signed to fame in '66. "slip away" ('68) and "patches" ('70) — both rick hall productions at muscle shoals. clarence cut "patches" after chairmen of the board, but his version is the one that stuck — country-soul framed by his own slide.

    later "strokin'" on ichiban — different mode, same laugh.

    nigeria's lady of songs. sang in six languages — ibibio, igbo, efik, hausa, yoruba, english. became the first woman to head pman a few years after this dropped.

    mitsu out of sendai, gagle crew's main producer. dwele coming off slum village's "tainted" the year before. planetgroove pressed it — japanese label reaching to detroit for a soulquarian-adjacent vocal.

    jobim and newton mendonça wrote it. the joke sits in the title — the melody is mostly one note, the harmony does the work.

    sylvia cut it in 1960 alongside joão gilberto's version. four years before getz/gilberto put bossa on the global map. tom wrote "dindi" for her.
