Great post today from John Gruber, arguing that Apple should reverse its sleazy slide into advertising. I couldn’t agree more.
Advertising is an inherently sleazy business, as I discovered working for a time at a large ad agency in the 2010s. There were some seriously talented people working there, as well as some unfiltered narcissists with the weird title of “creatives”, but I quickly came to see that the business pressures themselves were the issue.
Apple is just the latest large tech corporation to start being corroded and corrupted by advertising. Meta is ad sleaze through and through, as is Google, and as for Microsoft putting ads in Windows … need I say more? For Apple, there is still time to reverse course. But not much time.
