  1. Just found out about this Bartz v Anthropic settlement where a copyright lawsuit is being brought against Anthropic for using pirated books to train AI models.

Once, I had an essay published in an anthology, so I used the Authors Guild search tool to look for the book, and it's included in the list of books being included in the claim. (I don't think I can file a claim though, since I'm not listed as the author of the book, so I emailed the editors to let them know the info.)

Anyway the deadline to file a claim is March 30.

One of the things pointed out in the resources linked up thread 👆🏾 is that if *every author eligible* joins the class, that will likely end Anthropic--which is a GOOD THING on a variety of levels: authors get some money, one fewer GenAI/LLMs thieving regurgitron to steal from them.

But it's also good because it will put pressure on all the other GenAI/LLM companies.

So, sleazy lawyers trying to convince authors to opt out feels sus.

  3. @bookstodon #PSA #Anthropic #AnthropicClassAction #Writing

The Authors Guild is also warning about people/lawfirms/scammers urging authors to opt out of the settlement, offering to get them $150K per stolen work as opposed to the $3K offered in the settlement.

    BEWARE who you trust!

For those authors who have considered opting out, hoping for a better offer/settlement, beware who you trust with your IP:

Via @victoriastrauss: "the minute the humongous Anthropic copyright settlement was announced, it became inevitable that unrelated third parties would seek to benefit...in this case, by convincing authors to opt out."

The settlement in the Anthropic suit has been approved, but there's a lot that still has to happen before any money is disbursed; @victoriastrauss has a very good rundown in this blogpost:

There's a lot more happening on the Anthropic case; the judge is a bit suspicious of the alacrity with which the lawyers for plaintifs (named authors) settled--Courtney Milan has a thread on that here:
    bsky.app/profile/courtneymilan

Tor/Macmillan authors have received an offer from the publisher to compensate them for works not registered, see Bree Bridges thread here:

"I realize that much of what I am saying is "contact class action IP lawyers if you are not part of the settlement class."

That is because they are the ones who will be best situated to help you"

I keep pointing people to Courtney Milan's threads for a reason: she's an author and a lawyer, and she understand the nuances of the situation better than many of the people being loud about it.

If you are confused (or dismayed) by the terms of the Anthropic settlement, including the whole "must register copyright with the U.S. government to litigate for damages" thing, you should read this Bluesky thread by Courtney Milan for more context:

Note: Courtney is both a lawyer and an author affected by all this, and she's been paying attention to issues with intellectual property theft for a long time now)

Relevant again: Authors, have you ever wondered if you could help destroy the thieving regurgitron takeover? Great news! YOU CAN!
