Now, I want to do the opposite. With this new series, Best Moments in Anime (#BestMomentsInAnime), the focus is on story moments with animation quality a secondary consideration.

It's quite a nerve-wracking thing to start something so big, and to attempt to pick up a mantle that has, sadly, collected dust for too long. I've run a number of smaller contests and ongoing topics all meant to bring yet another source of fun to anime-lovers’ feeds:

I’m gonna round out my #Animetion series with the obvious final example. I've already covered this one pretty extensively as part of the #FavoriteAnimeMoment series over at https://starside.social/@Ragashingo/112023481220497272, and it's more a summation of why animation is important than a showcase of it, but I love the sentiment all the same.

While Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has a bunch of cool magic animation, Ubel fighting her clone is one of the standouts in character animation.
The first person perspective thrusts, kicks, and blocks are very impressive. The wide shots are neat too, as both Ubel and her clone are trying to hit each other with their invisible, super powerful Reelseiden slashing spell as they fight. You can see the spells clashing and tearing up the walls in addition to the physical action!

Akebi's Sailor Uniform is a modern classic and has some of the best #Animetion I've seen in #anime.
The big draw of this sequence is Komichi Akebi tying her hair up. The movement and flow is just perfect in the way it gives her hair volume. But that's not all there is:
Look at the end of her run cycle in the close up shot. Her final expression changes when she sees the jump coming up.
And I love the subtle detail that makes her cheek feel soft as she removes the stray hair from her mouth!

There’s so much that can be said about each of the Revue Starlight Movie's operatic stage play showpieces. Each represents real world clashes of personality or ideology played out on a magical “Stage of Fate" where resolve and showmanship are what decide the outcome.

This sequence from Macross Frontier: Labyrinth of Time reassured me that the short film was an honest, full force effort.
We have Ranka Lee running hurriedly through an awakening Protoculture ruin, pulling off her waterlogged jacket as she goes. The act of removing the jacket has multiple steps and a nice, wet weight to it.
I also really like the way the jacket's various tassels and buckles bounce in time to Ranka's footsteps. All while the camera spins round her! Awesome!

A lot of the time I like focusing on more subtle #Animetion. But sometimes it's great to just see a studio let loose and go all out with the effects. And for that, you turn to Ufotable.
This clip from the 3rd Heaven's Feel #anime movie just gets more and more explosive with every second that passes. We see the beautiful formation of the Shiro's Rho Aias shield, Saber Alter's Excalibur attack, and Rider's Bellerophon in an effects heavy scene that just continues escalating till the very end!

Each season of the #anime Symphogear brought better and better transformation sequences for its six main heroines, but the 5th season really outdid itself with transformations that combined the characters' personalities with great hybrids of traditional and CGI #Animetion.
Here, Tsubasa Kazanari's sequence shows off elements of her stubborn stoicism, of seeing herself as a blade to be wielded against Japan’s enemies, and of her repeated theme of being a phoenix that can fail but rise again.

An awesome #anime fight scene with plenty of dialogue and two rival characters' heads all but filling the screen from opposing angles? Let me check my notes. Yep, Studio Trigger.
This clip of Gridman and Battle Tracto Max fighting against the kaiju Anti checks off all the #Animetion boxes from the teams that produced Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
I’ll just geek out some more: That slugfest. Gridman's rocket punch. The beam-o-war and final charge! Awesome!

2017's Land of the Lustrous is one of the best examples of an all CGI production done right.
In this clip, the stoic and practical to a fault Bort and the brittle but ever improving Phos fight a strangely fluffy creatures sent by their enemies from the moon. I love Bort's midair battling!
The #anime really shines when it has a need to get crazy with its #Animetion and camera angles, but it remains just as lively in calmer scenes thanks to all around great character movement and voice acting.

In the Sound! Euphonium #anime, the beautiful instruments and hours of practice always come 2nd to the human drama.
Here Kumiko Oumae is struggling with being cut from her high school concert team for not being up to par. She finally realizes how badly her friend Reina Kousaka felt when their group failed to advance in their final Jr. High competition.
I love the immersive run in the beginning and Kumiko throwing herself at the pole later on, but really all of it is excellent #Animetion!

This #Animetion from Aldnoah.Zero is pretty cool even though it’s only about 45 frames long. We see a United Forces of Earth KG-7 Areion Kataphrakt get cut in half by what is likely the Mars Orbital Knights’ laser-wielding Solis.
What I like about this short scene is when you go frame by frame you can see the normal computer model for the Kataphrakt gets swapped out for a hand drawn version that is then used in the explosion. The debris even impacts the nearby cars and pole!

When the 55th Long Distance Colony Fleet’s main city ship is attacked by unknown aliens, flight school student Alto Saotome jumps in a downed prototype Valkyrie and attempts to fly new acquaintance Ranka Lee to safety.
I love everything about this #Animetion from Macross Frontier. From the tunnel of clouds left behind after a shot pierced dome, to the visualization of air flowing over the Valkyrie's control surfaces, to the way the #anime expertly combines its CGI and traditional elements.

Mikoto Minagi may be small, but her sword Miroku packs a ridiculously sharp blade capable of cutting through... this random van, at least.
Objects being sliced clean through then slowly sliding down the direction of the slice is a tried and true #anime trope, but I like the #Animetion here of Mikoto building up her momentum with something like 1,080 degrees of spin.
The cargo of the van spilling out at the end is just icing on the cake.

Good #Animetion doesn't have to be flashy. Take this scene from the #anime Planetes. Rookie space debris collector Ai Tanabe argues with her senior Hachirota Hoshino about the morality of objects placed in orbit.
Along the way, we get to see nearly flawless non-computer animated rigid space craft. Ai's faceplate sliding sooo smoothly into place. A couple great, detailed character tumbles. And, whoever animated that loop in Ai's safety cord as she flails about deserves some serious credit!

While other Macross shows have greater strengths in one area or another, 2002's Macross Zero is still the definitive example of how the #anime franchise’s iconic transforming Valkyries would fight.
From demonstrating advanced combat tactics across multiple battles, to showing off just how cool one of these planes would look as it transformed, it’s as if the other Macross shows used shorthand #Animetion by comparison and pointed you back to scene like this one if you wanted the full details.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is not one of my favorite #anime. I’ve always felt each new arc was a bit disruptively tacked on, for instance. But when its pieces do click, it is a spectacular, formative show for many reasons.
That goes for its themes, its characters, and its #Animetion. I meant to just grab Utena's iconic sword lunge from the opening, but, oh my, just look at how awesome Anthy, Utena, Saionji, Juri, Miki, Nanami, Touga, and Dios’ brief introductions are. Any anime would be envious!

I've always loved that shot as he reaches the edge of space and the camera catches up to his plane. Or the changes in the vectored thrust as he goes for a spin. And this entire OVA/Movie is filled with spectacular #Animetion of flying and advanced air combat.
