AI Is Not Replacing You. It’s Replacing the Version of You That Doesn’t Use It

A lot of people are scared of AI right now. That makes sense. New tools always make people nervous.
But AI is not some evil machine coming to steal your life. It is a tool. It helps people write faster, sort ideas faster, and get started when they do not know where to begin.
We have seen this before. There was a time when people acted like using spellcheck was lazy. Later, spellcheck became normal. Then it became expected. AI is heading down the same road.
That does not mean AI does everything for you. It does not. You still need judgment. You still need facts. You still need to know when something sounds wrong. But if you learn how to use AI well, you can move faster and get more done.
That is the real change.
The future will not belong to the people who feared the tool. It will belong to the people who learned how to use it.

New preprint: I got 400 postgrad health management students to use generative AI in an assessment, rather than banning its use. An honest write-up of what worked and what didn't.

The good: most students found it valuable. The structured scaffolding helped reduce anxiety for for adult learners who'd previously been told never to use AI for any assessments.
The less good: most students engaged instrumentally (Which tool is best? How do I prompt?) rather than critically (Which perspectives does this privilege? What are the equity implications? What is this missing?). A single assessment can help normalise AI engagement but probably can't develop deeper critical AI literacy on its own.
If you're designing courses this year and wrestling with AI integration, I hope the case study and design principles we lay out are useful. It's a preprint - feedback welcome.

"We believe that language is a device to increase people’s “AI” literacy, helping them make informed choices about technology acceptance.
A more deliberate and thoughtful way forward is to talk about “AI” systems in terms of what we use systems to do, often specifying input and/or output. That is, talk about functionalities that serve our purposes, rather than “capabilities” of the system. Rather than saying a model is “good at” something (suggesting the model has skills) we can talk about what it is “good for”. Who is using the model to do something, and what are they using it to do?
It takes effort to swim upstream against anthropomorphizing language embedded in commonly-used technical terms and popular discourse, both in recognizing the language at all but also in finding suitable alternatives. Whether we are participating in local discussions making decisions for our workplaces, schools or communities or writing for broad audiences we share a responsibility to create and use empowering metaphors rather than misleading language that embeds the tech companies’ marketing pitches."
