As a computer ignoramous, I enjoyed watching Andreas Speiss on YouTube demonstrate a workflow that seemed to try to do what you describe.

I think it would be interesting if machine-vision and a robot-arm could observe -for example - a Human-Machine Interface device and "see" if it output of the device did what it ought to when the knobs were twiddled.

I also wonder if AdaSPARK (or other ways of potentially verifying algorithms) might play a role in getting closer to what you describe.
